I noticed Fatima started a thread for 25 - 35 year olds. I just thought I'd start another thread for us older students. If you're in your twenties, you're still a teenager in my eyes. :D

I'm taking the NA course right now and will be taking the state exam right on my birthday, July 3rd. I'm signed up to take the nursing pre reqs this fall and next spring along with other required non-nursing courses. I hope to actually enter the ASN program in the fall of 2004. I should graduate in 2006, when I'm just about to turn 45. :D

About myself, I've been married for nearly 21 years. During which time I've homeschooled our three daughters, ages 19, 17, and almost 15. The oldest is also going into nursing. The younger two are STILL being homeschooled. I'm luckier than a lot of returning students since Science and Algebra are very fresh in my mind.

My husband is a medical transcriptionist and is very good at what he does. He has total confidence in me to complete this program. :)

I really enjoy this site and am sooo happy to be back in school. :D

Oops! Almost forgot! We also have two fur babies. One is a cat we nursed from about 2 weeks old named Pooky. The other is my 2nd DDs gerbil named Justin.

Okay Im not 35 or older but I just wanted to say good luck!

I think you will do fine! This BB is awesome. You will fit right in! I think it is amazing that you home school your children. I have been trying to convince my husband to do the same w/ our little ones. My oldest is 8 yr old boy and my youngest are 3.5 yr old twin boys. He wont do it...lol.

hmmmm... Maybe you could homeschool for summer school. I had some relatives, my sister mainly, that were against us homeschooling, so I started homeschooling my oldest during the summer to show them that it could be done. It really didn't change their mind, but by that time I was hooked on it and their opinion didn't matter to me anymore. ;)

Turned 40 last year and had graduated with my LPN when I was 39. I am working on pre-reqs for ASN now, hoping to be accepted to the program when I finish.

The way I figure it...I am going to be the same age when I get my RN that I would be if I didn't go back, so why not do something I want to do in the meantime? :)

Hi, I am 46 years old and will graduate with an associate degree in nursing in December. I worked as a nursing assistant for over 18 years on a med surg floor, then worked in a factory where they manufactured car parts( hated it). I worked for about 5 years in a nursing home and quit that after my second marriage. I started pre-req's in '99. I have failed one semester, dropped one semester, d/t my husbands 2 open heart surgeries. But now I'm on summer break and go back in August. Can't wait. You can do it. I don't have any children, just 2 cats, 1 dog and they think they're kids.LOL. I do have a wonderful stepdaughter who is 31 years old. No grandkids yet.

Hi,

I am 44 years old and have just completed my first year of a 2year nursing program. I have been in the medical field (non-patient care) for almost 25 years. My children are grown and basically on their own, so I decided it was time for me and my goals. Have thought about this for a long time and now it is here. I feel that my life experience will greatly help me as I finish up school and get into the "nursing world".

I love being in school with my goal only a year away. I wish everyone the best of luck with their schooling and career goals.

How did the first year go? :) I commend you for actually attempting the 2 year program in 2 years! It's very popular in my area to do it in three years. I have a feeling it's similar to the 3 year programs that the old nursing schools used to have, but the community colleges cram everything into two years.

Many students here, including myself, spend the first year getting all their general requirements out of the way. Then we have two years to just concentrate on nursing. I'm taking the nurses aid and CPR classes this summer. Then in the fall I'm taking Algebra, Writing, A & P, and Spanish (that's extra). Since I won't have anything really nursing related, except A & P, this fall and spring; I hope to get a job as a nurse aid so I don't forget anything I've learned this summer.

I wish us all good fortune in our efforts. :D It's sort of like an adventure, isn't it!

I'm almost 45 now. I completed the RN part when I was 34. Now, after 10 years, I'm back in school for the BSN/MSN part. If I had to do it over again, I would do the BSN route. Reasons: believe me I'm very healthy and active but I can't do floor nursing for another 20 years. You need to have options and a BSN/MSN gives you those options.

I am 38, separated with 4 kids and 2 grandkids....all living in the same house (so you can imagine a tad crazy at times ....lol). I am an LPN working in LTC starting on my RN with excelsior's distance program. With all my kids and having to work full-time, going to a regular school was out of the question, but I did'nt want to waste anymore time. I am hoping to be done in 2 years, but as it is self-paced it is hard to get motivated sometimes.

It is a great help for me having this board, and reading about people in the same position as I am.

My age was always a concern for me, but it is wonderful to see so many 35+ people going back to school. Gives me hope that I can do it too.

Hey Ann!

I'm 39, used to be a social worker and I homeschool too! (Which is why I work nocs.) Will your hubby be taking over the homeschooling when you start school? I will still be writing the lesson plans and reviewing my son's homework/schoolwork, but Mom will be doing the bulk of the teaching. Fortunately my son is 11 now and very self disciplined and motivated. Think I might use a program this year where his coursework is sent to a traditional teacher for correction and grades. We have been giving him the ctbs/terranova and the CAT-E each year to chart his progress.

Good luck on the CNA test. I am sure you will do fine! The one in NJ took us 15 minutes to complete at the testing center. It was primarily common sense. When in doubt choose "Go to my supervisor." (hehehehe)

School for us starts the 7th of July. It's a 44 week course for LPN. Our local JC has a bridge program for RN...I wanted to get some experience before going for RN. (Can also work that way too!) So we are getting "every" subject. First test...July 9th in micro. hehehe. Can't wait. I am a total geek, who loves school.

Good hearing what everyone else is up to as well!
