Results for CA
California does not participate in the Pearson early results. That is why you did not see your name. You can log on to the BRN http://www.rn.ca.gov and look under license verification. Put in your last name and see if you have a license yet. Other than that you will need to wait for notification from the BRN. Don't feel bad as I am in the same boat.

IV Therapy Classes????
Hi, I don't know of any classes in the East Bay, but there is the Hospital Consortium Education Network in Burlingame (on the Peninsula) that offers an IV Therapy certification for LVN's and RN's. You might want to give them a call and see when they are offering the program. Their phone number is: 650-696-7860. Hope this helps. :)

Taking The Nclex....
Everyone you talk to and things you read say to take the test within the first month or so. I was pinned on May 21, am taking the Kaplan review class which will finish on June 17 and will take the NCLEX on June 26. The longer you wait, the chances of passing decrease.

Filter needle when drawing from vials or not?
It is hard to understand why certain facilities do not use filter needles. I was taught to always use them. However, in one of my clinical settings while I was in school, they did not use them and thought we were nuts for asking where they were. This is basic patient safety. Shreds of glass can be very small and get in there and cause damage.

I have to be bathed by my classmate???
I just don't understand what the big deal is. This is so not an issue. If you are told to give your fellow student a bed bath than that is what you do. There is an art to giving a bed bath and keeping the patient covered and warm at the same time. You owe that to your patients. We have done fingersticks and started IV's on each other as well in school. It is so much better practicing your skill on another person than a mannequin.

Authorization to test
I am in California. Even though our transcripts are not in yet, we still receive our ATT and are able to schedule our test. The results will not be released until they have your transcripts. I graduate tomorrow and I received my ATT at the end of April. Last Saturday, I received my interim permit. Kind of scarey. Best advice is to send your paperwork into the BRN as soon as possible as it probably took about 6-7 weeks until it was processed and approved.

How long for ATT?
I live in California. Submitted my paperwork to the BRN in early March and got my ATT April 21. I graduate May 21. Have already signed up for my NCLEX to be taken on June 26. The thing that takes the most time is for the BRN to approve your application and process your paperwork. Hope this helps.

No Benefits not an option for new grads???
Don't think of it as cheap labor. If you add in your benefit package (vacation time, sick time, retirement, life insurance, ED Leave, tuition aid) it is far from cheap.

Dcis
First of all, DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) is not a benign disease. It is a malignancy. In Breast Cancer there are five stages of disease and DCIS is Stage 0 and has the best prognosis. DCIS is a malignancy that has not gone through the basement membrane, there is no invasion. DCIS is also known as non-invasive ductal carcinoma. It is best to have a consultation with not only one or two surgeons but the radiation oncologist and medical oncologist. This is one of the main reasons that we do screening mammogram to find those malignancies that are still at Stage 0. Your young age will also make a difference on what treatment will be recommended for you.

Have you ever taken care of a celebrity?
It is all about HIPAA. You as professionals are obligated not to discuss anything that may identify the patients you have taken care of. Stating their names is a violation. People lose their jobs for such violations.

Dr. Dean (democratic primary contender) on Nursing
The more I read the more impressed I become. It has been a very long time, perhaps never that I have actually felt good about a candidate. In the past it is finding the lesser of two evils and voting for them. It was actually my 20 year old son who turned me onto Dean with his stand on education. I then became aware of his stand on healthcare and nursing. Awesome. I hope he can continue on like this and be able to implement the much needed changes.

Kaiser Employees
Hi, I live and go to school on the Peninsula. I have done a couple of my clinicals at Kaiser Redwood City and know that they do hire new grads. They make a point of having the nursing recruiter come and talk to us, etc. The class from last year I know of about 1/2 dozen students who know work at different Kaisers as new Grads. What is the new unit in Oakland that you are talking about?? Good Luck.
