Hello!

I'm wondering if anyone else has applied to SFCC to start in the spring? This may be rare since all nurses New Mexico nursing isn't really active, but thought I would try. Good luck to those who are still taking pre-req's, who are waiting to be accepted from a program, or who are currently in a program!! ☺️

Hey! I just found out a couple days ago that I am done with all my pre-reqs for SFCC. I'll be applying to SFCC in January. I toured the school last April and the campus is really nice. Their entrance exam is the Kaplan test so i've been looking around for post on how hard the test is.

Are you thinking about applying to SFCC?

Greetings! Glad to find someone who is interested in applying. The New Mexico thread does not get any love ? I actually applied to start in the spring and I was told that we will be notified this week or next week. I am extremely nervous but I hope all odds are in my favor. Yes- the entrance exam is the Kaplan which is different from the HESI (If you've taken the HESI) since you will be applying in January, If you have any questions regarding the process, feel free to ask me! Will this be your first time applying to a nursing program?

LOL yes the NM thread is very dry . Yay good luck, I hope you get in! I've applied to UNM & CNM with no luck with either. I've taken the HESI twice (due to CNM's changes). I thought that the HESI with science was pretty tough. I studied the Elseiver HESI Assessment book for a month and I was barely able to pass the Chem & Bio sections with 75%. Do you have any advice for the Kaplan?

Also, from what I see, Patho 2 is no longer a requirement for SFCC's program? When I met with C****** back in April he gave a list of the required classes. He sent me some updated information last week and the pre-req's are just the classes on the NMNEC website?? ^ lol I hope that makes sense!

Thank you so much. Fingers crossed. I am 24 years old and I am ready to be in a program! With the HESI, I found the bio and chem to be very easy. I am horrible at math so that's my "weak" area. For the kaplan, the math is pretty similar to the hesi's math section. Know your fractions, decimals, ratios, they do add about 5-6 nursing dosage problems so that's new. The science portion deal with physiology and it's very specific. Go over all of your systems like GI, cardiovascular, electrolytes, sensory, renal etc. The writing section was HORRIBLE!!!!!! I thought I was good with English but that was my lowest score. Brush up on your subject-verb agreement. I checked out an SAT book from the public library and ordered a book from Amazon. The reading comprehension is also similar to the Hesi's reading. I received a 76 overall. I heard the avg is low 60's low 70's. Patho is not a required course. When are you planning on taking the kaplan? Do you also have your BLS certification? That's required- I am taking mine next week.

Take your time with the Kaplan. I took a break in between so I completed 2 sections then went to the bathroom, got a drink of water, and walked around. I also brought some ear plugs with me. There are many people in the computer lab who are taking the same exam AS WELL as taking other exams so it's pretty noisy in there. Breathe and read each question carefully. Unlike the Hesi, you don't receive your score from the section after you complete it instead you receive your score AFTER you submit your test so that was comforting for me. I would study and go over your weak areas... And study a few weeks in advance.

I'm only 21 and I feel exactly the same way! It's depressing seeing all my friends getting ready graduate in May (my "projected" graduation date) and I'm not even in my program yet :(. You did good on the Kaplan! I'll probably take the Kaplan in December since I'm not applying until January.

On the HESI, I did great on all the other sections except for the science. Now I know that I need to do a lot more studying for the Kaplan. Is there a passing score for each section or just for the exam?

Yes I have my BLS/CPR/AED Certificates along with HIPAA. I also have my CNA so I hope that gives me a few extra points.

I have friends who are younger than I am who are in a program. I am the last one out of my little cohort of nursing friends to get in a program. I feel like I need to "rush" but then I think that everyone is different. It's not good to compare yourself to other people. I know I am going to be a good nurse. I will look back and will appreciate my lengthy journey.

If you ever need any help understanding physiology let me know. I will be glad to help. Cahalan told me to try to shoot for high 70's for the Kaplan so I hope my score is enough. The minimum passing score is a 55 and I think that it's overall..

Great news! They give 1 point extra to those who have their CNA and EMT licenses! So you are in a good place applying!!!

Very true! I have been having a hard time trying to accept the fact that I'm still waiting to get into nursing school and most of my friends are graduating. I've been pretty depressed but now i'm just trying to get myself up and start working on my goal again! You will be an awesome nurse, I can tell and I don't even know you lol!

Awesome! I going to start looking for study materials so I can't start preparing for the exam. 76 is a great score since passing is 55. A good Kaplan test and a high GPA should get you in!

Did the study materials you bought help you out on the Kaplan?

I'm so happy about the 1 extra point because I live in ABQ and I won't get the 1 point for being a Santa Fe resident!

Everything happens for a reason and everyone has their time. I am hoping this will be my time. If not, I'll be reapplying with you in January. I have 3 friends who just got in for the fall and they are really enjoying the program. It's intense of course. Thank you for your kind words! Just keep your eye on the prize. You also have the option of sending in your resume. I am not a CNA but I am a caregiver/home health aide and have been working with the geriatric population for 2 years so I was able to report all of my experiences with agencies as well as with private care. Cahalan told me that those who get accepted have a 3.25. How is your gpa? I retook some classes in the spring and I am glad that I did. Are you originally a student from UNM or CNM? Where did you complete all of your pre-req's? I was reading the Grand Canyon thread and saw that you were interested in GCU. Are you also going to apply there. I still have all my physiology papers as well as my study guides if you want to borrow them!!!

Yea thank you for the motivation! I'm glad the program is good and your friends are enjoying it! I think I will send my resume, I have work experience and a lot of volunteer experience as well.

I have a 3.4 and i have been trying so hard to boost my GPA for UNM. I have taken my pre-reqs at both UNM & CNM. I have mostly A's & B's but a few C's in the labs :(

Yes I am still interested in GCU. I be applying there next spring because I still have to take Patho 2 and A&P2 Lab. Also Scott wants me to get my GPA up to be more competitive.

That would be so amazing. Thank you so much! I'll have to keep contact with you so I can borrow the study materials

I was thinking of applying to GCU but the fact that there's only 24 seats scares me! Also, since UNM is basically impossible to get into, a lot of students are finding out about GCU so there are more people who are applying. The tuition price also scares me- it's so expensive!

I am getting a little scared/intimidating. I do not know anyone who applied with me this term so I don't know the stats. I'm hoping what I have is enough!

Send me a PM and I can give you my cell and when you are ready to start studying, I can give you all of my materials! Hopefully, I won't need them anymore!! Lol!
