Any RN's from UK in US pursuing furthur ed

Published

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone who emigrated from the UK is pursuing furthur education in the US.

I'm looking at BSN programmes now with hopes to go on to NP. Seems to be quite a lenghty process trying to figure out the US education system, what with credentials evaluations, prereqs etc.... Not to mention having a hard time tracking down transcripts again. My school of nursing has apparently changed hands four times since I emigrated in '95!!!!

Anyone?

i am doing my rn-bsn program. your transcripts have to be educationally evaluated to transfer credits into the program. if you have certain classes completed before you start, half way through you can transfer into the masters programs, with no bsn, but a shorter time to complete your masters which if you take the right route will eventually take you to nurse practitioner.

Interesting. Thanks for the reply Cariad.

Can I ask you a few more questions.

Which RN to BSN programme are you doing? When did you start? Are you going for the NP route too? Did you have credentials eval'd thru CES? What did your education back home end up being equivalent to over here? When did you qualify back in UK? How easy was it for you to get hold of your transcripts?

Ummm, guess that was more than a few questions eh!! :-)

Much appreciated.

i am doing the course thru grand canyon uni in phoenix and the hospital where i work is funding it. i pay for the books and any extra classes that i take. i did my sen a long time ago and my original transcripts are held in cardiff uni and although they took some time to track down and get sent, the trouble is that they are handwritten and faded, so when they are copied and sent over here, i cant get credit for them. you have transfer in 83 credits and i was given 84, and that doesnt count the sen part, but unless i chase them again, i cant get anymore.

Thanks Cariad,

How do you like Grand Canyon? That's great that the hospital is paying. I'm per diem and no-one will pay unfortunately! :-( I've thought of going back to work at a hospital and can't bring myself to do it!

Are you in Phoenix or doing it online? Did they give you all those credits based on your RGN alone?

Thanks for all your help!

I was only looking at this last night you can as a US RN and taken an online course with Dundee University. Only problem is small cost of $15,000 LOL can be taken over five years. They will hopefully look at my UK degree level courses I have taken.

Really not sure if I want to put in the time but going to think about it.

i am doing it as a ground based course, once a week held at my hospital but then work to do at home, each week and all the information is online and gets submitted through your computer anyway. they gave me the credits, but told me i could pick up more if the originals could be read properly. they were originally done by cgfns but then grand canyon had to do them again as cgfns hadnt recognised the originals and only originally gave me 64 credits, i took the bridging course in scotland and had no problems with getting those transcripts.

As cariad has rightly said it is takes a lot of effort to get credentials and transcripts organized but it can be done I am about to start an MSN with advanced practice I chosen Midwifery but could have do NP if I had chosen. My advice is work with a college or university try and chose one who has an academic admissions board then if like me your credentials are different I was able to present to the board and get awarded admission- but if want to stay in US and want to work as an advance practice role you need BSN or MSN so you might as well get started.

Hi,

Ann, I looked at the University of Dundee, still trying to figure out stuff! Good luck with whatever you decide. Thanks for the heads up.

Cariad, Pleased to hear it wasn't too much hassle getting your RGN transcripts, shame about the SEN ones not being readable. You're all set with the credits now though right. They managed to give you 84? I've been looking at UOP and met with an advisor last week. Very expensive but might be the way to go. I'm concerned about the prereqs thru them though, seems it would be less expensive to go thru the CC instead. Then again, who knows until I get my transcripts! They said they would eval my unofficial transcripts but then obviously need the originals. It's such a catch 22. They said I could start anytime but I'm concerned in case I can't track them down and then I'd have to drop out for a while. How's it going with GCU?

Thanks Belinda. I know, one step at a time right. Might as well get started cos I'm not getting any younger! :-) Do you already have your BSN? Did you have a hard time tracking down your transcripts? Who are you doing your degree with?

No I do not had a BSN - I managed to present to the admissions board as an equivalent and got accepted on the MSN it can be done believe me - I am studying with frontier school:)

I looked at this too, but decided against this now. I really want to do my Orthopedic certification instead next year (which is very hard apparently)

most of the hospitals in the phoenix area will fund you, just so long as you work for them, they will take the money back from you if you leave, theres a certain amount of time owed to them for the money they pay for you. i officially finish in april, and i can honestly say its flown by.
