Any "50-ish" Pre-Nursing Students?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi Everyone,

I am new to posting here. I do read posts on occasion although Anatomy keeps me pretty busy! I was hoping to meet others near my age and hear your stories.

I am 51 and have another year of pre-requisites and I will apply to the local JC's ADN program. It's on a lottery system which has its pros and cons. I take one science class per semester and am fairly well challenged, but am holding my own with Bs.

I never finished college and once I finish the ADN program, I'd like to get my BS, hopefully the hospital I work for will pay!

I have 3 kids and a very supportive DH. Sometimes I get feeling like I'm too old for this and then I learn something new and it gives me the resolve to keep going. I love all that I'm learning!!

Looking forward to meeting you!

Elle

Just yesterday, my friend and I both got into our first choice nursing program - which happens to be a JC & uses the lottery system (just like the one you plan on applying to)! So, even though those science classes may get to you at times -- know that there are others just like you & they have succeeded in getting into a nursing program too! You can do it!

CONGRATS!!!

To all the folks out there who have posted about 50plus going back to school. Guess what, we are the folks who worked for it, probably pay our mortgages, with a down payment, and are not part of the X Y or whatever generation, but believe that education is never closed to anyone at any age. For those who post under our age, until you walk in our shoes, be careful what size you choose. Besides we are part of the baby boomers, i would rather have somebody my age taking my blood or telling me its ok to let go and leave this world than another nurse at the nurses station wanting to get home to her 3 yr old sick child.

Thank you! I am going to an Orientation Meeting today! Elizabeth

God Bless All Nurses!!!:loveya:

I went to the orientation meeting today at the local community college, the nursing program is downtown. I can apply for Summer 2010. They had 300 applicants for the Spring semester and 60 slots. They are making their decisions based on previous gpa's...So I will submit all the paperwork and transcripts, while continuing to work as a Patient Care Aide with alzheimer patients in their home. The agency I work for is providing training, a small group of us Caregivers are just about finished with the Patient Care Aide class, then we will do clinicals in the local nursing home - assisted living, then take a state exam. I will keep on my path, as I know God has a plan for me. Thanks to all! God Bless, Elizabeth

It's great reading all the posts.....gives me encouragement to keep on keeping on! I registered today for my first semester at the University of Alabama and will be going for a full four years to my masters.

Also, FYI for any (all) of those who suffer from test anxiety as I do - as part of my holistic training I learned a VERY effective technique to control/rid yourself of anxiety (as well as any other undesireable emotional issue you may be dealing with). It is quick and easy - but don't let that fool you, it is VERY effective. It is called EFT and can be found at www.emofree.com. You can download a FREE 87 page manual that will tell you all about the technique and exactly how to use it. Good luck to all and thanks again for all of the encouraging posts!

good luck to everyone!

you can do it!!!!

Congrats to all of you working on your nursing careers a little later than some...I did it; I'm at the tail end, in preceptorship and I'm 44. I'm the oldest one in my class and kinda proud of myself :yeah:. I always joke about everyone being 20 years younger than me; which really isn't true since I go with a few ppl in their 30's. But I enjoy being with younger people (hah that sounds like something an OLD person would say!), just as I enjoy hanging out with my kids. Thank goodness they have never made me feel ancient or excluded me from the group-I don't think anyone getting into the nursing field should have that type of personality anyways. Patients are really surpised when I tell them I am a student, seeing an older woman they automatically think I am a seasoned nurse. Even though my time management and organization skills might be better, I do think I tire more easily-anyways these are all things that can be dealt with one way or another...I wish you all the best of luck. ;)

I just finished my first AP paper and was so excited, then I remembered my age. I'll never have to say - I wish I could of because I am. Yes, I wish I was 20ish but my classmates treat me as an equal. We (OK classifaction of 50ish students) know a lot because we've been there or done that or witnessed that and THAT is what we can bring to the table. I love this thread and forum. Thanks new friends...
