I'm currently in a pmhnp program and do not have any military experience. But, I'm very interested in working for the military when I'm finished with school. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this? If so, would you recommend it to others? What do you like about working in the military? What do you dislike? And of course I have to ask, how is the salary compared with private sector jobs?

I am a psych NP in private practice. I can't speak to the military piece of your question, but I know there is a great need for mental health providers in the military, really in general. If you have a passion for psych, you will love this job. They pay overall is very good for PMHNP's. Good luck on your program!

I'm waiting on an army board to convene so I may commission into the army reserve as a PMHNP. Peculiarly, the army has great need for these folks but no one seems to know an army PMHNP or what they do. Most haven't met one, lol.
I'd like to do this for soldiers, but frankly I think in my spare time, I.e. drill, I'd rather just be a soldier/officer.

"zenman" on this site is a military PMHNP. Search his past posts. I believe he is still active here but does not post much.

I wish he was willing to talk salary. Back when I was a new grad the VA paid terribly compared to the private sector in my area. The last I heard their top wage for a NP was around $130,000 so no where near what I make and I wouldn't be close to close to the highest step. Its a shame because I enjoyed working for the VA as a RN, not enough to make 1/2 what I presently earn however.
Same. I'd go there tomorrow if they'd come even within 15,000 of my current income.
