Any OR Nurses?

Published

Hello - Im a new new nurse with only 3 months of experience on an ortho/neuro floor. I am hating my life right now. When I was in school, I knew that I eventually wanted to be an OR nurse, but Im trying to get some experience first. I started out on day shift, but it was too difficult, so my manager switched me to night shift. It has been a little better, but I still HATE it! I know that I am not cut out to be an floor nurse and I just want to be working in the OR. I talked to my manger about my issue and she was very understanding and told me she would see what she could do to help me out.

I was wondering if anyone could explain to me the pros and cons of OR vs floor nursing, the hours, the workload etc. Is it less stressful than floor nusing or is it a different kind of stress? Right now I am taking 6-7 patients and its just way too crazy!!! This would really help me out a lot. I am pretty sure that this is what I want to do, but I need some advice! Thanks so much.:specs:

Lee, go to the "specialties" tab and scroll down to "Operating Room Nursing". You will find a lot of valuable info. about this field. Good luck! We need good O.R. nurses out here and it isn't taught in the schools anymore (for the most part). Many of us are retiring and there are very few nurses to replace these positions.
