I am a Canadian diploma RN of >10 years studying for the NCLEX. Few years ago I took the Kaplan course and failed. Honestly though I did not study much. Now I am very determined. I am considering a study group or tutor. Anyone else within the Toronto area (or specifically Brampton) also studying for the NCLEX?

This thread is not specifically related to working as a nurse in Canada, therefore it belongs in the International Forum. Making it so.

I'm in the opposite situation - from the US and working towards my license in Canada. I took the NCLEX in October and passed on the first attempt with 75 questions. I didn't take a Kaplan class but I do hear good things, although they mostly teach you strategies for success - ie. how to read the questions and pick the right answer as opposed to teaching nursing knowledge. I did use their online testbank to practice test questions. I had to study entirely by myself because I moved to Canada right after graduation. Of course it helped being educated in a US nursing program because they base test questions on NCLEX, the way you learn little things about the CRNE in Canadian programs.
Just remember that the NCLEX and CRNE are very different exams - NCLEX has more concrete questions requiring more in-depth nursing knowledge. You'll see most questions have multiple answers that are correct and you have to choose the best one, or it will ask you an "all of the above except", or "select all that apply". Be sure to read each question properly and look for the strategic words - it's very easy to overlook them and then pick the wrong answer.
I would highly recommend the "Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN Examination" (4th Ed). It's honestly the only thing I used to study for the exam. It's about 1200 pages with each chapter being dedicated to a particular body system and it's medications and then has practice questions with rationales and a CD-ROM included. It'll teach you everything you need to know for the exam. Even has test taking strategies specifically for NCLEX.
Also, don't forget to learn how the NCLEX works - it's computerized and scores while you take it. So you might only have 75 questions and finish in 45mins like I did, or take 6 hours and do the whole exam. If you get a question right, it gives you a harder question than the one you answered. If you miss a question, it will give you an easier question instead. Make sure you're familiar with the exam technicalities.
Good Luck!

Hi There,
Are you still studying for the NCLEX?
I live in Toronto and am studying right now - lots to learn, esp. Pharmacology, as our school did not have much emphasis on that.
I did the CRNE in Oct. 2010, and passed.
I am working just as hard and learning the stratergy as well as some content using Kaplan online course (which CRNE did not need much). I plan to write in 2 weeks.
drop me an email at [email protected] if you would like to chat.
As for the person writing CRNE - It is very very different than the NCLEX - It is all about stratergies and critical thinking, and it is very much Community Health focus, lots of teaching and 40% of exam is case study based - make sure to practice the from the CNA CRNE official question book. The others are not even close to what is tested on the CRNE.
Goodluck.
Think Positive and it shall all go well! :)

Can you tell me how you registered for the nclex and how long it took to have them schedule you for the exam. I just graduated, took the june exam and was unsuccessful although i ve always look forward to writing the nclex exam since i will be relocating next year.
I did study for the CRNE exam, not sure what I did wrong. For the past 2 weeks, I have been feeling hopeless and depressed cos this is the first time i will ever fail an exam.
Please let me know how u preparing for the nclex exam, I have the mosby and Kaplan 2011-2012 strategy textbook that i will be using to study for the exam. Even though i find the mobsy overwhelming, looking into buying the delegation Lacharity textbook and Saunder if possible.

I'm studying for the NCLEX. I haven't gone through the process of applying for a test yet but I bought Kaplan & Saunders already. I just need to get going on the studying. I'm sorta overwhelmed. I feel like there's a lot of material to cover. I'm sorta stressed because I'm applying to jobs at the same time.
Where are you applying to? I had a job offer through the new grad initiative, havent had the courage to call the hospital about my result, will certainly do that this week because I am booked to resume work full time next week. I dont know if they will allow me to start work until I pass my exams.
What school did you graduate from and werent u offered job offer at your last clinical placement?

Are you talking to me? lol
I'm applying everywhere basically (hospitals, agencies, home care, etc.). My last clinical placement wasn't hiring anyone. Tried new grad initiative but I haven't gotten a call back or anything. I'm kinda getting anxious because I have OSAP to pay. Sorry to hear that you were not successful with the CRNE. Keep your head up and keep trying.
