Any male nurses working in OB?

So I just finished my semester of labor and delivery and was wondering how many men there are that work on OB units? I rather enjoyed my rotation there and am considering it when I graduate. Is that totally unheard of?

Yes you can find guys working Post-Partum and Labor & Delivery. Me being one of them. You should apply for a position there. Good luck.

I don't work L&D but I attend a lot of deliveries being a high risk RN in the NICU. There are two of us guys where I work and two in L&D it does not seem to be a problem for most. There are cultural problems with some who don't want any men in the delivery room at all, but when told I am there to save the baby as it is in distress and may die they seem to change their minds. If available and time permits I call another team for them, but we normally get a last minute call to attend the delivery, and our units are not next door to each other, I must do the recovery.

I also work in NICU, but spend a lot of time in deliveries and in the nursery. On top of that I'm a lactation counselor. Very rarely has it been an issue and I would love to transfer over to L&D, there are just no positions at this time. It can be hard to get into the specialty in general, but not impossible. If you really want it, go for it.

I have gone to the classes but I am more into the high acuity patients, the sicker the better, I'm not so much into the well baby thing.

OB nurse here. I work at a pretty busy L&D/PP (80-100 deliveries/month) unit for the military. Overall, I've been very well received by both patients, family and staff. I do vag exams, peri and breast care, breast feeding, etc. All the more "intimate" things and haven't had a patient refuse my help. For the most part, if you maintain your professionalism and show that you are caring and competent, i don't think a lot of women care what sex their nurse is. I really enjoy the field and hope to see more guys in the future. Best of luck to you!

If you go to youtube, there are 'zillionz' of women happy to give birth live on camera. I can't imagine a male nurse would be an issue in this day.

As a patient and an OB nurse, I can say

a) we have had men work on both our L&D and mother/baby units and they've received high praise from patients; and

b) as a patient in L&D/mother-baby, I did not care whether my nurse was male or female. As it turned out, all my nurses were ladies, but the CRNAs that put in both epidurals were men, and they saw it all. I did not care. They were there to do a job and they did it. I hope you are able to do what you enjoy.
