Any lactation consultants or counselors?

I have been approached to apply for an RN/Lactation Consultant position that might be opening up by my manager. I have been to one workshop and would like to become certified. I have been getting plenty of information about getting certification on the internet.

If the position opens up and I get it, I would like to be known as the lactation counselor until I could become certified.

My question is this: Any hospital LC's on the board? I specifically would like to come up with a "breastfeeding assessment form" to document mom's breasts, nipples, latching on, etc. I haven't found anything like that on the net. I also would like to list my nursing diagnoses on this sheet as well as discharge planning. I have plenty of nursing diagnoses already. What I would like to see is any form that you are using that I could possibly use or modify.

Hi, I am an out of hospital breastfeeding counselor (in a BSN program right now), I plan on sitting for the IBCLC board exam next summer. For certification, are you talking about board certification (more info at http://www.iblce.org -I know that wasn't your question but I thought I would refer you there since all the info can be very confusing and they are the governing body for board certification)? I think you have a good plan to call yourself a lactation counselor until you are board certified (otherwise it leads to confusion in a field that is already fuzzy in the title arena).

I also have a "Breastfed Newborn Triage Form," "Screening form for the early follow-up of breastfed infants," "WELL BREASTFED INFANT CARE" (has developmental tasks for different aged babies), etc. in Word format that I could send you if you email me at [email protected]

I have a bunch of other misc. documents too, let me know if you have a need/interest for any particular topic and I may have something that you would like.

Just be sure to search first before posting if you have question because it's high volume and they can be testy if you take up space asking things that have been addressed a lot before.

PS... I'm jealous.. you probably have lots of great resources if you are in Austin, with the Mother's Milk Bank (http://www.mmbaustin.org/), I think you have a strong LLL group (http://www.lllusa.org/web/AustinTX.html -the page isn't coming up for me right now, maybe down for service?), and I know at least one or two big bf guru/author names live in that area too :)

Hey thanks for the reply. Yes, I am talking about that certification. I'm hoping to hear from others, too.

Oops, I don't live in Austin...that's my husband's name. I get ribbed all the time about "Debbie does Dallas", so I came up with "Debbie does Austin"...TEE HEE.

I'd highly recommend signing up for LACTNET's email (Mitchsmom gave you the link) - I know the subject of standard assessment forms has come up. You might also check out "coach" Linda Smith's books - she has a book on becoming an LC in private practice, and I'm sure she goes over all the various forms that would come in handy - that would be helpful for you, since you will be essentially starting a program from scratch.

I'm also jealous! I plan to sit for the exam in '07.

I signed up for LATCHNET as soon as I got Mitchsmom's post. It was very helpful. I even posted regarding visiting hours and possible reluctance of parents to breastfeed due to liberal visiting hours. That site will be a valuable resource for me!

Oh, what a wonderful message!! I want one of those next time I am up to having babies. LOL

I have always been interested in becoming IBCLC certified, even before I became a nurse. Thanks for the link!
