Any experience with these camps?

Published

I've not done camp nursing before, so I'm pretty clueless about what I should be looking for in a camp. I have a thirteen year old daughter who's never been to summer camp and I'd like to find a camp that will not only take her, but will provide her with a great experience. These are the camps I've heard from so far: Matoaka, Lindenmere, Wayne, Trail's End/Chestnut Lake, and Wicosuta. Does anyone know anything about these camps? Can you tell me what you look for in a camp where you're considering working and sending your child? Thanks so much for any advice!

Hi, SpotAlbert,

I will message you! I worked at one long ago and am working at another one this summer!

Camp Wayne nurse don't get out much. I only met one at the local watering hole last year. It seemed about average, but they didn't have the extra staff my camp did.

Susan, thanks so much for your input/advice -- I really appreciate it! How old are your girls?

My girls are 6 and 9. They are so excited to go! I'm a bit afraid/excited by the fact that for the first time in their lives, I will NOT be in charge of their welfare day in and day out. I tell them, "If you have problems, you need to go to your counselor, not me!" So even though I'll be working all the time, I'm still "on vacation" this summer! :)

I applied in November and interviewed with 8 camps. I kept a list and compared what they offered. What made my decision was the fact that there is a doctor on site, a structured routine for the nurses (compared to having 2 nurses that were on duty 24/7), and a great benefit/pay structure. One camp wanted the tuition to be the only pay I received, that would not work for me.

For my daughter I wanted a camp that offered the activities she enjoys, a sense of community, and one that I could see her and be involved in camp activities. I hope to hear more about your decision. The camp websites are a great resource. I am going to Chestnut Lake, but Camp Wicosuta was at the top of my list also. I did not apply at any of the other camps on your list.

I worked as a camp nurse for a number of years with the Global Youth Village. They cater specifically to teens, 13-18. Although the pay was not as great as you would get from other camps, it was a great place to work and the administrative staff pay a lot of attention to safety. (I don't have any children, so I can cannot comment about the youth experience from a parent's perspective.)There are back up nurses around (volunteers who live near by), so you can get some down time away from camp, and the MD who backs up the nurse is just a 10 minute drive away and a great doc to work with.

Hi everyone. I have gotten several job offers and have narrowed it down to Camp Cayuga and Camp Westmont. Any info on either of these camps would be greatly appreciated. :) I need to make my decision soon.
