I don't work in Calgary but further north in Alberta.
The issues are basically the same throughout the province. Increased patient acuity, increasing patient to nurse ratio, working short staffed most shifts. Equipment is getting old on some units and is slow to be replaced. Families are very demanding and often aggressive as are the patients. Overtime is available to pretty much anyone who wants it. Burnout in nurses is becoming common and stress levels are rising.
The provincial economy is booming, housing, utilities, food, transportation costs are rising. Nurses don't receive the same bonus payments as oil field workers.
*waves*I am going to Calgary tomorrow and I cant wait.
I am a LPN ( Registered Practical Nurse as we are known in Ontario) and cant wait to experience Calgary.
Welcome :)
Hi,
Have you arrived in Calgary? If so just wondered if you have hit a brick wall regarding work .. I am struggling with the AHS freeze there will be nothing for some time. New Graduates will obviously come first so its not great

Hi there Mrs A :)Yes I have been here for five weeks. I am working with an agency but unfortunately there is no guarantee of hours which is the nature of working with an agency.
Are your hours being cut ?

I dont work for AHS.. I am a Uk nurse and have been in Calgary for 7 weeks now. I have just been following the developments in Calgary. I am just about to start registration with CARNA.. I expect by the time that I get sorted to practice the hiring freeze will be over.. ( fingers crossed). Have been told that it will take CARNA upto 10 months to sort registration..
Glad you at least got some work sorted here.. Hope things improve for us all:)
Take care

Enjoy!!
I love it here, I still get a kick out of seeing the mountains when I drive to work (& an even greater kick from visiting them!) My daughter's in The Young Canadians &, therefore, is in the Calgary Stampede Grandstand Show & I love the unit I work on, apart from the current issues with the AHS of course! However, I'm sure they can't last forever!

Hi Everyone,
My husband just recieved a job offer for Calgary this upcoming summer. We are very excited about our upcoming move. I was just wondering if anyone who has worked in Calgary could shed some light about the scheduling of nursing shifts in Calgary. My particular area of interest is the recovery room; but, I would greatly appreciate any information that can be provided.
Thanks,
Krista
