Hi, I'm currently in search of a baylor nursing job only working weekends due to the fact that i just had a baby and want to be home more. Any advice from those who are currently doing this? How do you like it? How does your family take you always working weekends?

I just gave up a baylor position. I worked in for a year. Yes I liked it. It was great in the summer. During the school year it was hard sometimes , because the kids wanted me home on the weekends, but they liked having me there during the week. There were several reasons I quit. One was to get ICU expereince (i transferred), there were isues on my unit I was tired of dealing with also.

If you have children under shool age it would fine. Does you husband work during the week? Is it going to be a problem working his days off? Is he doing to be available for child care on the weekend? Keeep in mind most family functions are on the weekend, so you'll be missing alot (this can be a good thing, or a bad thing:D )

Hands down, the BEST schedule I have ever had...

I have already posted several times about the advantages of working the Baylor System. I love it. Just a word of caution, a 12-hour shift is a long one so do not expect to get much else done during the weekends that you are working them. It should be a work and rest time, that way you can perform well on the job. Get your supports in place to help with the kids on the weekend; housework, errands et al should get done during the week when your off if not delegate!!!!. That is key. You can get your uniforms and work supplies ready during the week also.

If you are working 7a-7p chill out Friday evening before you start have your work stuff assembled and ready to go and then do something nice for you. Rest.

That Saturday evening after your shift is a great time to go to a movie or do something low stress with the family then get to bed. Your Sunday's will go a lot better

If you work 7p-7a like I do then chill out Saturday AM and try to catch a nap before you go to work. Again having your work stuff together makes getting ready a lot easier. After your shift in the AM, go to bed and sleep as long as you can, I generally get 6 to7 1/2 hours. My family is supportive so all I have to do is sleep in on the weekends that I work. When I get up I chill out and pamper myself with a long hot bath, facial and time on the couch in front of the TV or on the phone with my girlfriends. I return to work refreshed knowing that half of my workweek is behind me and the other half is just about to be completed. Monday morning I go home, go to bed and then like to go out to a movie or something with my husband. By Tuesday I am ready to enjoy my week off.

I would also advise against working too many extra shifts during the week, as many Baylor nurses tend to do. One shift only is what I would recommend and I would work it as agency and not as pool since the rate of pay is higher and worth the time that you are giving up. Working at your own facility to cover call outs and vacations may not be worth your while either even though supervisors and staffing coordinators will beg and beg. Remember they are trying to staff the place as cheaply as possible, you on the other hand should be trying to get the highest rate of compensation for the time that you are taking away from your family.

I worked a "Baylor Program" for about a year and loved the schedule. The hospital I worked at had a stable weekend staff and I found that to be an advantage because I happened to work with a very good crew (the reason I took that position in the first place, I knew some of them).

I'm with one of the previous posters, don't work extras at your hospital. The way our program worked was one was paid a very high differential for weekend hours which essentially paid one about the same as working 36-40 hours at an average wage. Of course one didn't get that diff if one came in during the week. I did much better working at another hospital as PRN one day a week.

We didn't get many hours of PTO but one didn't really need all that many hours to cover a weekend off. With one weekend off one could be off almost 2 weeks.

There can be issues with family but our kids (my step-children) are teenagers and the one that doesn't live with us tends to visit mostly during the week anyway. I did miss going to concerts and other events that were held only on weekends but sometimes one could attend on Friday night if it was a all weekend event.

I hated to leave but our wonderful charge nurse was leaving and I was completely frustrated with the current management. If my current hospital offered this program I would jump on it in a second.

I am new, and am thinking of entering nursing school. It is very important to me to be able to have time with my future kids. What is a Baylor nursing job?

A baylor is a program in which you work every sat and sun 12 hour shifts and get paid for working 36 hours. Otherwise known as weekend option. Different places do things differently, but that's the main idea.

The Baylor Plan is administered differently in different places.

I used to work it and it was and 8 hr shift on Friday, 2 (12 hr) shifts on Saturday and Sunday. I didn't last long doing this kind of a schedule.

Where I work now, it consists of 2 (16 hr) shifts on Sat and Sun.

That's full time hours and you get paid for 40 hours.
