hello again,
well i've decided to apply to a couple of different uni when applications open next month. however i'm starting to feel a little anxious about it all. i do have mild anxiety (i'm not on anything for it) but i'm worrying about things already and i haven't even applied yet.
nursing really interests me and i really like helping people but i'm just having a few reservations after a couple of things. i don't have children (don't want them either but that's not relevant) so i have pets instead. a handraised bird and a puppy. now my bird has twice flown into fans and hurt herself. the second time was quite bad and she knocked herself out. she is okay now and we have made modifications to how and where we take her out now so no issues there. but my worry was that i didn't handle the situation very well (yes i stressed out - it was my baby injured, bleeding and having seizures). i'm hoping this is just because it was an emotional link but it still worries me (chronic worrier here).
i've had other things too that i've kept my calm in - like my husband having chest pains and having to drive him to the hospital (admittedly i drove prolly a little faster than usual but still.) i was able to tell the doctor and nurses his symptoms and his medical background and what medication usually helped (he couldn't talk due to the pain).
i've had a few people say that they think nursing suits me so i'm hoping i'm just overreacting but did anyone else feel like this before they started studying, or even during and/or after studying?
Hey SassyWhat area of nursing will you be doing? Is it a post grad course or what?
I studied through UNISA initially and worked at the RAH next door, so if you want any help let me know.

It's my initial Bachelor of Nursing degree. :) I'm just starting out in the Nursing world. I've just about finished my application. Just need to find my student number from my university and it's ready to go. Then I just gotta wait to hear the outcome. Fingers crossed for me please? Thanks for the offer of help.
Cool bananas!
I will cross my toes and fingers. I know what it's like studing cos I am waaaay behind with mine at the mo (gotta knuckle down more today and get my uni assignment finished), but of course am on call for work and have had other, annoying things to sort out (mainly to do with bills and money)!
Email me privately if you need help hey.
Let me know if you are successful; I have a feeling you will be.
Good luck!

Yeah I'm doing a short course at the moment through work to be able to be an assessor within the VET structure. So I know how annoying it is to be working and trying to do assignments. Hopefully though I will either be working at the mines or doing work within the Health department when/if I get into Nursing. I will PM you when I find out whether I got in or not. Hope everything else is getting better for you. Haven't heard back from you for a little while besides today .
I find the nursing at uni interesting. Not too hard and nothing like it really is in the real world but hey who cares we get to learn about lots of fun things like old guys who really knew their kids. Just concentrate on your asignments and watch out for what each lecturer wants. Some care about content others care about referencing.

Just a thought - one piece of advice (I could give you lots but I'd be on here all night!), try to plan NOW where you are going to do your clinicals.
UNISA used to have a computer system where they would open it for 3 days, and at 07.30 am everyone was scrambling on there to get on the system to choose 6 preferences for their clinicals. I had to go to RAH for all of mine, and I had been working there, so I knew quite a few people, but I wasn't a nurse there and it was a completely different ballgame!
Make sure if you have to, get up REALLY early to get on the computer system and choose your clinicals, cos if you leave it late, you will only get crappy wards or hospitals. Country people could negotiate theirs but in the city, we had to take what we got.
Just thinking while I was sitting reading here - I needed a break from reading about clinical psychiatric assessements! There is so much to remember and all the new terminology to learn (and I thought my first degree was hard...)
