Antelope Valley Hospital

Well, as I live in the area and have been to the hospital numerous times (visiting patients, clinical rotations, and as a patient in the ED) I do not recommend this hospital. The area itself is at the northern most area of LA county, so the location is not very far from LA, the beaches, etc. but Lancaster is not a very affluent area, the ED is pretty dangerous, recently an ED LVN told me they get locked down almost every night. The cost of living in the area is excellent, as compared to other parts of southern California. A two bedroom apartment can be rented for under 1,000 easily and a condo can be purchased for under 200,000. The area has high crime, I heard it is the crystal meth capital. A lot of people move to this area from undesirable areas of LA because of the affordable housing, so there is a high crime rate and plenty of drugs and gang activity as well/ If you have children be aware that a lot of registered sex offenders are sent here as a part of whatever probation does. This area and hospital leaves a lot to be desired.

Whoo...this really scares me a lot. I searched the internet and I found out the crime rate in Lancaster is higher than the national average.

I was in the ER last week and it wasn't pretty!!!!!!!!!!

Palmdale is much safer than Lancaster, has equally affordable housing and you could commute to one of the excellent hospitals in the San Fernando Valley IF you are on a shift other than days!!!!!!!!!!! :nurse:

How far is San Fernando Valley from lancaster.. and which hospitals are they?

the commute to san fernando valley everyday can be up to 2 hours one way I believe.

The commute to Holy Cross or Northridge would be 45 mins for off hours. Valley Presbyterian or St Joesphs would be close to an hour. This is if you work pms or nocs. If you worked days the only way to go is to leave AV before 5am and commute times would be the same. Olive View is the county hospital in Sylmar; again45 mins. There are several other smaller hospitals. There are only 2 hospitals in Lancaster, none in Palmdale but one is being built.

oh ok, i thought it might take a while. I only know of antelope valley hospital in Lancaster (the one on Ave K). Which is the other one? I tried to look it up, but it only talks about AV hospital. And the new hospital you are refering to in Palmdale... if it's keiser you are talking about, it's actually not going to be a hospital, i think i was told they are going to be clinics.

The other hospital is Lancaster Community. Their parent company is just now breaking ground on the new hospital in Palmdale. Kaiser's new clinic in Palmdale is already open.

I've Heard AV hosp. runs by team nursing in med/surg, so you have 8 pts w an LVn and an aide, not really what I'm used to. I grew up in the AV, I like it thier, but crime has gone up in recent years. It also depends on the neighborhood you live/work in. But I've heard AV hosp. can get pretty scary. I'm htinking of moving back to the AV, but I work in LA so trying that communte again does not soundlike fun

I have been associated with the AV for more than 30 years now and let me tell you that it has really changed in that time. In the mid 80's it wasn't so bad, Lancaster was the affluent area and Palmdale was the armpit. Now it's the opposite, although niether one could entice me to move back. There is just the one main hospital, huge gang influence and tons of crime. If you have a child, I would definitely think twice about it. I moved out of there when my child was in second grade...she was not safe walking to school. I lived on East Ave J-1 and 10th street (10 years ago and the grade school was less than a year old 'Lincoln' for those of you close by). Just my opinion. Oh by the way I bet I've spent 30 or more nights in the ER or some other section of that hospital over the years (non nursing) and with rare exception had a less than stellar experiences. I just moved out to Lancaster this year... already got my house robbed! Can't wait to move out of here (as soon as I can afford to). That's the good thing about this area, it's actually affordable!
