Another TV show villifying Nursing

Published

I just got through watching another episode of Third Watch on NBC. Tonight was the conclusion of the manhunt for a serial killer who turned out to be you gessed it a MALE LPN:angryfire . I get so tired of seeing these shows portray men and the nursing profession in this manner. Throughout the police investigation they focused almost soley on nurses as possible perps, (although they did consider failed med students or doc's who lost their license). This particular killer killed by heparainizing a teen girl's blood and draining her dry through an IV in her antecub. They acted like only a nurse had the knowledge to kill people in this manner.

Sorry for the rant, but I wish TV and movies would quit slamming nurses and perhaps show us for the true professionals we are!

Thanks ya'll

Well, surprise, surprise, the article in Reader's Digest about "The Killer Nurse" was about a MALE. They got an email from me.

(Although they did reprint an article in the very last couple of pages from the AJN about a positive nursing experience. One page for that article, several for the KILLER NURSE)

Oh my gosh....it's TELEVISION for goodness sake.

Well...right or wrong, killing sells. Any time someone in a position of trust kills, it sells even more. I'm sure that the teachers complain about being portrayed as student screwing sex kittens and that police officers complain about being protrayed as evil, violent wife killers. For whatever reason, it sells and it sells big time! Sigh...

And now my soapbox about patients refusing certain nurses, etc based on race, etc. What are we going to do about it? We are never going to change people's opinions on things like that...and when they are ill, injured, in a nursing home, etc is not the time to try. It would be inappropriate for the facility to telll the patient that if they want care, they are going to have to take it from whoever they send into the room. I would have major concerns about doing that anyway because if something bad were to happen the **** would really hit the fan.

Also...I rarely rely on our male nurse to help with lifting and things...the female nurses use much better lifitng technique because we have to...we don't have the brute strength! :-)
