Probably because the in old days they rolled up their sleeves, and now without sleeves to roll up they put these cuffs on to follow the same or similar look. I remember the separate stiff collars and separate cuffs of the UK blue and white striped uniforms of the students and the all blue or green for the RN and EN.
Cuffs - yes just a bit of the design because it looks 'nice' or has anyone any other suggestions?
Mister Chris
I have worn cuffs...............!
they kept your sleeves from falling down because no matter how you rolled the sleeves up, they fell down. so the cuffs kept the sleeves up. they werent uncomfortable to wear and I must admit we looked smart.. but then I wore the whole lot.... dress, peter pan collar, starched white apron and cuffs! you rustled as you walked but boy.. did we feel like 'real' nurses!!

I have noticed that all of the older uniforms, and even some of the more recent have these little white cuffs that are worn on short sleeve dresses. What are they for? Is it to prevent something from falling out of the sleeve?? Since only horses sweat, and ladies glow, I can't imagine what the purpose of this cute, but probably uncomfortable items are.Cheers!
I wore the lot navy blue dress, cuffs to keep my long sleeves up, white collor fastened with an old collor pin like the men use to wear, white stiff apron, blue belt with silver buckle, and for the rounds (Dr's) sleeves down and a stiff white wrist collor, hey that was only back in 1977.
