This is the transcript on an ACTUAL radio conversation of a US Naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October, 1995.

Radio conversation released by the Chief of Naval Operations 10 - 10 - 95.

Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision.

Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.

Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.

Canadians: No. I say again you divert YOUR course.

Americans: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES` ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH. THAT`S ONE - FIVE DEGREES NORTH. OR COUNTER MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP.

Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

I love this little story. I have seen it in many different forms. First time I've seen it as Canadian and American though. Very cute! Tee-hee.

Made me cry from laughing!

When I heard it, it was Brits. Still funny - I love the "your call" line.

Hey, Did I hallucinate it, or did I hear on the news last week about the British Navy getting lost and "invading" Spain instead of going into Gibraltar?????

LOL!!

Dennie-

You are correct. The Brits did indeed invade Spain last week but they apologize so, no harm no foul.

Wouldn't it be great if everything else worked out that way.

Flynnstone, It's true! As part of an exercise, the Royal Marines had to storm a beach in Gibraltar, near the Spanish border. Their navigation was a little off, and a squad of our finest charged up the beach until they met a Spanish policeman, who kindly gave them directions!

Dear donmurray, Thanks for the info!

DonMurray -

So it was the Marines... Well, that explains it. I was brought up with the understanding that the Royal Navy could do no wrong. I guess the Navy probably delivered the Marines to the wrong place, though?? What a shame.
