Those that have seen me post before know that I want to be a NICU nurse.
My local hospital that has a NICU is about an hour away and they had over 60 applicants for only two NICU positions that the hospital had available...so I wasn't able to secure one of those. (preference is given to scholarship recipients/current employees of the hospital working as PCT's).
However, I was lucky enough to get a place in L&D...and when I interviewed they told me that I would have tons of opportunity to "float" down to the NICU as they were always needing help.
There were only 4 of these positions available, so I feel very, very fortunate.
It's all starting to happen! I start June 2nd and I can't wait.
I know it will be different than what I imagine...they have a huge problem with drug-addicted babies here (50% are born positive for illegal drugs)...that was made clear at the interview.
My prayer is I hope my love for children and babies won't work against me as I know all babies are not born perfect and some don't make it at all...I just hope that I'll be able to handle it emotionally.
To me, that will be the hardest part.

I'm only a student at this point but I share your concerns and I've posted about it before. Whenever I tell people that I am interested in NICU, the first thing that comes out of their mouths is....do you think you'll be able to handle that? My belief is that people like us who truly have a desire to help the little ones in need, will find the strength when we need it. I too know that all days will not end happy and I do fear that my emotions may overcome me but I just have to keep in mind that the little ones need people like us. Not everyone is cut out for it and I think that our love for them, our compassion and our true passion to make even the shortest little life the best it can be will get us through. I think you'll be a wonderful nurse whatever the situation and I wish you the best of luck:redbeathe.
