Work some prn like mad if you really want to rid it, however, don't let a year pass just because of small debt. In the overall picture, if you finance your education then what's an extra 12000 to the 100K to 200K debt you will have at the end of the program. You will come out starting at 150K easy with a ceiling of 300k range if you work locum tenums frequently. Waiting a year will put you at least 150k in the hole. Get started. What are you waiting for? Deciding on the right time for anesthesia school is like trying to decide the right time to have kids. Besides, many anesthesia groups will sponsor you or pay a bonus to cover the cost of your schooling. 50k range is not unusual.
I to am in the process of appling to CRNA programs, are you saying that I need to pay off my BSN loans first before I can obtain another loan? I guess I should contact my loan company and ask this question. Thanks for making me think about this.
No, you do not need to pay off your BSN loans first. If everyone needed to be debt-free before going on to grad school, we wouldn't have very many MDs, lawyers, business(wo)men, NPs, PAs, Ph.D.s, etc. I do not intend for this comment to be a negative one. I was out of school for just over 2 years, have some loans from my BSN, and am now in anesthesia school. I got loans very easily. I went through Wells Fargo. My BSN loans were from another lender, and they are in deferment until I'm done with school (or drop below part-time--which won't happen).
Don't worry about the money...worry about getting in and kissing your life away for 2.5 years! But it's worth it! :wink2:
New to site. Thinking of second-career in Nursing (NP or CRNA) -- looking into Accel BSN / MSN program.
To the OP -- Loans: When I went to get my MBA, I was allowed to place my small undergrad loans on "hold." As long as you're a enrolled full-time student, you can defer your student loans while you're in school. The interest does accrue if they are not-subsidized loans. If they are subsidized, the interest does not accrue. So, it would be crazy to not attend anesthesia school. Call your loan service company and ask them what you need to send in. Good luck!
And thanks guys for contributing to this website--it's helping people like me take that plunge. I'll be asking Qs here and there.
I work for direct loans a student loan servicer for the US Dept of Ed...you don't have to pay off your previous loans to go to grad school 9 times out of 10 the only way you would have to is if you were over your stafford loan limit and if you wanted more stafford loans...either than that there's the grad plus loans that you can take up out to the entire cost of your grad education.... as long as you don't have any loans in default you should be fine with getting new ones just talk to you financial aid dept at school.

Ranking, hmmmm!
Who has time to compare the rankings of schools when they all are there to guide you to the certification exam? Good or bad, it is a school that is the train to your future. I would hop on whatever train will take you there, no matter the ranking.
Besides, most of school is about the effort you put in, the non-stop reading and memorizing and applying and dedication and discipline.
Read "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" and then apply. You will need to be organized and disciplined to make it through!
