Hi,

I am taking the ANCC Medical Surgical Certification test next week and wondered from any who have recently taken it how long the results of pass/fail took to receive? There are quotes from them but I wondered what the reality was of late.

Also, in general terms, without any specific content sharing, how did you feel the test was as compared to what you expected?

Thanks in advance.

Well ... I took it today and was given my score at the exit. I was really surprised at that. I thought it would be mailed. I'm glad I looked down at the paper as I thought it was a proof the exam was taken and a note to wait X many weeks for results.

I passed and am glad it's behind me now.

Guess that answers you question then!

Congratulations.

I took it by hand twice and passed and it took several weeks to find that out. Awesome that you get results instantly. Hopefully, I won't let it exprie and won't have to take it again. :)

Thanks. I hear you. I would not want to take it again either ;=)

Don't want to bust your bubble. But, my head don says that the med-surg test is a slam dunk, by that I mean that everybody passes this test. Once you pay the money, you've passed. It's like "Who'sWho among high school and college students" ; you pay the money to buy the "Who'sWho" book and your name is put in it. It's not based on your abilities to take a test. My Don says the hospitals get a 50% kickback for the exams taken. That's why hospitals push it so much. So, I have lost faith in the credibility of the exam and it's importance and relevance to my profession.

Hi,

The ANCC lists stats here:

http://www.nursecredentialing.org/faculty/PDFs/2006CertificationStatistics.pdf

Other than that information, I cannot say how many pass. Perhaps your DON has some inside info that is not publically posted.

My hospital does not push it at all so I can't imagine any kickback setups. This was strictly a personal goal.

Take care.

Thanks for the info and link. I guess I am really soured on taking this exam. It seems meaningless to me. Why say that you are "certified" in the area that is so basic and not specialized. This type of nursing has alot of "average" people and many who could not do well in any other areas. I find it ironic that there is a "certification" for it.

I'm going to unsubscribe from this thread now so Happy Holidays!

Think I hit a sore spot with my blunt and honest comments. I believe that there are too many specialties that are shallow and meaningless. Look at all the 'Specilaities" and you will see what I mean. I think that these "certifications" are just money -makers for the "testing" people. Let me hear your opinions if anyone differs.

It is weird that there is a certification exam for m/s nurses when, from what I understand, most of what you learn about pt care in nursing school is centered around general medical-surgical patients.

Well, I don't know about the ANCC's exam... I took the Academy of Medical Surgical Nurse's exam, the CMSRN, and passed it, as did just about everyone else at that hospital who took it EXCEPT ONE person.

So... consider that. =)

i took the med/surg test with about 100 people and at least on fourth failed. i passed and immediately got a raise from my hospital for being certified. worth the test. by the way, i thought the test was worthless at questioning my surgical nurse competency. it was very general and my particular test was mostly about research. i, too, think this is just another way for a certain group to make money without truly making a difference.
