Bad Rep for Med Surg
I apologize for sounding synical about my job. I think sometimes I get frustrated with the people I work with that have no job pride. I have over 22 years experience in ICU, Pacu, and now Med-Surg. I get aggravated with folks that start IV's, insert NG's and operate even suction heads (these are nurses who I have worked with for over 10 years).

I don't think Med-surg is a specilaty. Isn't it what we are trained to do? I work with people who can't work anywhere else. That's scary. I find it hard to comprehend why this "specialty" would be "certified".

Bad Rep for Med Surg
Med-surg is not a speciality; isn't it the basics of nursing? I don't see anything thing special about . That's why there shouldn't be any "certification" for it. that's like being certified "nurse". Aren't we all "certified"?

Think I hit a sore spot with my blunt and honest comments. I believe that there are too many specialties that are shallow and meaningless. Look at all the 'Specilaities" and you will see what I mean. I think that these "certifications" are just money -makers for the "testing" people. Let me hear your opinions if anyone differs.

Thanks for the info and link. I guess I am really soured on taking this exam. It seems meaningless to me. Why say that you are "certified" in the area that is so basic and not specialized. This type of nursing has alot of "average" people and many who could not do well in any other areas. I find it ironic that there is a "certification" for it.

Don't want to bust your bubble. But, my head don says that the med-surg test is a slam dunk, by that I mean that everybody passes this test. Once you pay the money, you've passed. It's like "Who'sWho among high school and college students" ; you pay the money to buy the "Who'sWho" book and your name is put in it. It's not based on your abilities to take a test. My Don says the hospitals get a 50% kickback for the exams taken. That's why hospitals push it so much. So, I have lost faith in the credibility of the exam and it's importance and relevance to my profession.

Med-Surg Certification
My hospital is pushing for everybody on my med-surg unit to become "certified" med-surg nurses. We have to pay $385 dollars upfront to take the exam and then our hospital reinburses us. Apparently, this "certification" lasts 5 years and then you have to take it again. I find it "funny" that our state doesn't require any "over and above" ceu's for this "cert". I recently read in another forum that this was only a money making deal for hospitals . Apparently, hospitals get a kickback for those that take the exam (regardless, if they pass or not). Anyone have any thoughts on this subject?:uhoh21:
