An RN-owned hospital?

I was listening to a story on NPR about a nursing home RN who became disturbed by the conditions at her workplace. Eventually, she came to the conclusion that the only way to address them was to open her own nursing home so she could use the best practices. Twenty years later she has dozens of patients and is glad she took that risk.

That got me thinking...so many nurses here are clearly unhappy with the administration of their hospital/clinic, wouldn't one obvious solution be to start one's own hospital/clinic? Is that largely an insane idea? Or a good one, but hard to implement?

I know what people will say, "This guy hasn't even started nursing school (starts Sept 10th) and he's talking about opening a hospital?"

I don't mean that it would be a good idea for me, at least at this time, but what about a group of more experienced nurses....

If it would include LPNs too, i'm all for it.

We've bought this up before...millions of nurses donating money and starting their own hospital. Guess how far it got?

Specializes in ICU, ER, EP,.

I was listening to NPR too and missed that show this afternoon :-(

Personally, I'm glad there are other disciplines out there that worry about purchasing, budget, regulatory compliance... on and on... It's not for me at all. But I love the theory of it

Great idea, but I wonder how many doctors would actually send their patients there? I mean, they would essentially be managed by a "subordinate" discipline. At least in my area, I don't see that the doctors are that progressive! Whoa, it won't take that much to get me started - I'm reading "Nursing Against the Odds" and am feeling very negative right now! :angryfire

Are you kidding? No, it is not an insane idea! This is one of my major reasons for attending nursing school! I plan to work as a floor nurse for a very short time! I will move into administration as soon as possible. Plus, when I get the financial backing, I will open my own place assuming that making six figures as an administrator is not enticing! GL.

Not really. Any good hospital administrator is going to see the value in having a medical director who is a doctor.
