Have any of you experienced redundant clinical attire instruction sessions?

My program has a document that specifically states the appropriate and acceptable attire for clinicals. There's even an official store that has all of the uniforms and a person that is fully familiar with the dress code. Unfortunately, we had to talk for an hour about the dress code on three separate occasions. These were instructor initiated and led discussions. A total of 3 HOURS!

Do we really need students commenting about thong vs. string panties?

Do we really need to know that lace bra's aren't acceptable?

Did I really need to learn what "wife beater" t-shirts are?

Wouldn't it have been easier to create a video and expect the students to watch it during non-instruction hours?

Isn't there a better and more time efficient way?

It's annoying to those who wear appropriate clothing. Unfortunately, there are people who need to be told OVER and OVER and OVER again. We had to hear it during orientation because, even though dress attire was business casual, people still came in wearing shorts and other beach wear and club clothes.

That is so true!

how can you "forget" that you arent to wear brightly colored underwear under white scrubs? or anything else but plain white or skin tone?

it would seem to me the second and def the third time this happened they should be out of the program,,,,my interpretation would be that it is being done on purpose....

I've graduated, but that was one of the more annoying things about NS. I went to an accelerated second degree program - by definition, every single person already had a baccalaureate degree. That means everyone is at least 21/22. We didn't need that lecture, since the dress code was in our syllabus. No one in my clinical group ever broke dress code that I saw - if they wore a purple thong, their scrubs must have been thick enough to hide it. We got the lecture again before psych clinical, since we were supposed to wear business casual. So much of NS was a waste of time, especially the professors who chose to read powerpoints to us that were cut and pasted sentences from the textbook. They didn't all do that, thankfully, but when some folks were at the podium I'd either nap or practice questions...

Don't ppl look at themselves in the mirror before they walk out of the house????? Seriously!!!! :banghead:

At orientation a little over an hour was spent talking about the dress code. We were told what kind of panties and bras we could wear (white or flesh colored full coverage) among other things. Some (dumb :twocents:) ppl actually had questions as to why we had to wear white/flesh colored full coverage undergaments. The instructor explained that a colored thong or panites show through white and that it is inapropriate for a nursing student to wear such things! OMG!!!!! There were still grumbles after the explanation about not being able to wear thongs.....

The instructors went on to tell us that we need to wear deoderant, brush our teeth, shower, comb our hair (and pull it back), have clean nails & wash our uniforms (etc) before coming to clinical.........I was like what the heck??!!! I am not an idiot!!!!

Oh well I guess this is part and parcel of the nursing school exp. :selfbonk:

I will gladly attend any "redundant clinical attire instruction sessions" regarding the above topic.

I'm a visual learner........

Me too. I wouldn't mind a lab demonstration as well.

As some others stated, their are idiots everywhere, and those few, ruin it for the majority!! So the school is forced to act and do something about it, they can't afford to be loosing clinical spots!! But no matter how much they rave and rant, someone will still screw up,lol

We actually did have a demonstration. Just before we started clinicals one of the instructors stopped in during class to speak with the instructor, dressed for clinicals. I was shocked at how she looked (and smelled). She walked out & then our instructor asked us what she had done wrong, pertaining to our dress code. It was actually kind of fun recalling everything. I don't recall a thong but she did have on colored undies.

It's my opinion that no matter how many times you are told, someone still will break the dress code, either just because they don't care, they don't think it's important, erroneously thinking it doesn't pertain to them, or because they don't listen.

Please give my compliments to your instructors. A picture is worth a thousand words. I can only imagine how fun and thought provoking the demonstration proved to be.
