American system of nurse education versus German training

Published

Hi guys,

my name is Karsten Hartdegen and I´m writing to you because I´m looking for contact to German interested students from the United States of America who want to exchange ideas, thoughts and more of their country and culture.

I´m 40 years old, married and have two kids (2 and 4 years). I´m head of a school training nurses (tied to a hospital) and hope to get a lot of informations of the American school and education system, ecspecially in terms of nurse education.

So, can you help me?

Of course too I want to make my (American) English better on this way, maybe someone want to learn a bit German!

Thank you a lot for your interest.

With kind regards

Karsten

Hi (what´s y

maybe it´s your system that will be "translated" to our system in a few years. At our universities the bachelor and master degree is not implemented. With a lot of difficulties as we thought before!

What are you doing now at work?

Post scriptum: You will visit us (or "my" country) someday, surely!

I think Karsten is asking about what area of Nursing we are in... as she does not yet know us or our field of nursing and/or specialties.

Karsten, all the many specialties in nursing are listed on the BB, so let's say if you are interested in reading or obtaining info on something specific... for example, Cardiac Nursing, or Emergency Room nursing, or Pediatric Nursing, Newborn Intesive Care nursiong, etc., etc., you can "click" on that particular "forum" and read and or post messages and questions there. Or you can look through the "General Nursing" forum, for a little bit of everything. There is the HUMOR forum as well, (always good for a laugh or to just relax and have some fun)... the Current Events forum is about what is going on in our country/world at the moment... and we even have a forum for Nurse Educators, as yourself.

It might take you a week or two to figure out how to navigate around the BB, if you have any questions or need some help, speak up ! ;)

I will refrain from writing lengthy messages in German here, as I don't wish others to think me rude.. but we can pm back and forth and chat in German to our hearts' content, ok? That way I can keep up my German, and here on the public forum, you can work on your English. Sound like a deal ? :D

As you get to know these great nurses here, you will get to know where most of them work, also. Just hang around awhile... you'll be part of the family in no time ! :)

She´s the star!?!

StevieRae...How very sweet of you.... :imbar Gee.

I was just fortunate.. has nothing to do with talent. Mom is from Vienna, and I was raised in Germany.. attended all German schools, etc. The other languages were mandatory in my schooling, so it's just part of what I had to do, I guess.

I am very grateful for having had the opportunities I was afforded in my youth... it has everything to do with who I am now.. and my view on things.

As for "inspiration"... you all are MY inspiration ! I have learned so very much from so many of you, and you have allowed me to peek into your hearts and souls.... have permitted me to pour out much of mine and have embraced me unconditionally. Now THAT is kool !!! :D

I do, however, appreciate the kind words.. more than you know. :kiss

Hi (what´s y

My name is Deb...but since there are so many Debs here...I just go by Mattsmom. ;)

I work in adult critical care.

Welcome! I have visited your area of Germany and found the country and the people to be beautiful.

There are several ways to get licensed as a Registered Nurse in the USA. Some people go to a diploma school (not many left, but they are generally associated with a hospital or religious organization), some get Associates Degrees (some college plus 2 years of nursing school) and some get Bachelor of Science Degree (4 years of college with nursing school included). All must take a national exam in order to get their license. Most acute care facilities are wanting BSN degrees for manager positions. Paying for education is the hard part, as our government does not pay for it unless you qualify for government grants. Most people have to work a little while going to school, or work full time and go to school part-time. Is this what you were looking for?
