American Nurses in U.K

Updated:   Published

Hello Everyone!

It has been a long time since I have been here, so I hope that I am in the right place. I am thinking about nursing in London. All of my kids are adults and I love visiting the U.K. Has anyone worked in the NHS? If so, how was the experience? Thanks, in advance

Hello! My name is Tatiana.I’ve just recently moved in England to join my husband here. I have a ADN with 20 months of experience in med-surg telemetry. I completed half of program for BSN but didn’t finish it due to financial situation. As I read above posts, that NHS requires BSN .Is anybody here had the same situation like me, what can you advice me to do? I live in Manchester, do you know how long it can take for me to  obtain BSN here and approximate price of program. It sounds like my degree& experience is not considered here at all only because it is 2year program in US.

I would try and register. Have seen a few ADN members say they met requirements. I did my BSN online with Dundee university

Dear Tatiana,

Having a BSN is not compulsory for nursing registration and practice in the Uk  even though it is good.

Unfortunately, I cannot tell you the equivalent of an ADN certificate in U.S with that of UK, ‘only’ NMC Uk  https://www.nmc.org.uk/  will be able to accurately do that after verification and evaluation of your certificate. The process is easy and fast.

To do that, you will need to peruse their website and register https://ireg.nmc-uk.org/

you will be asked to fill some information and pay £140 initially then the state board of Nursing which you were registered will be contacted for verification of your certificate which NMC Uk will evaluate.

step 2- you will be sent an authorization to write the CBT and OSCE exams.

3. The CBT exams is quite easy and just a test of your nursing practice, after that you can now apply for jobs and be employed by either a private or government owned health facility that support overseas nurses to write the OSCE.

Please Note that these process is quite easy and can be completed between 2-6months.

Please let me know if you need any further help but please get all the correct information on https://ireg.nmc-uk.org/

Thank you!

Hi,

You will be able to apply to register with the NMC with and ADN license. I did and I am about to take my OSCE in 2 weeks so it should be fine. Whether you have a BSN or ADN you will still have to go through the same process to register here in the UK including the 2 part test.

That's great because just a few years ago an ADN was not accepted. I wonder if they will accept Accelerated BSN students now too.

Yes, I believe there might be a few fellow nurses on this thread who have that and have been invited to test!

That’s great , thank you  for reply. Do you know if it is mandatory to start as CNA or it is possible to skip this process in order to get licensed as RN in UK?

Hi there!

I was wondering if anyone had any information regarding nurses who complete their licensure via a second degree program, accelerated program etc. and was able to register and work in the UK as a nurse. I am currently in the process of applying to nursing school so this is all just research for me. However, I do have aspirations of working for the NHS and being in England sometime in the future. It seems like from what I’m reading a lot of agencies or hospitals are requiring nursing programs to be at least three years in length, but the programs I’m applying to are all shorter than that as I have a degree already and am entering the field as a second degree student. Do you think this is something I can get around in the future? I really want this dream of mine to come true and I don’t the length of the program I graduate from affect my chances of one day working in the UK.

Thank you

I haven't read anything on this forum although you can see above that others have said it is possible now. I would recommend contacting Continental Travel Nurses (https://continentalnurse.com) and asking them as they specialize in helping overseas applicants get licensed and have probably dealt with other people in similar situations.

Glad to help. Go ahead and post what you find out- if accelerated BSNs/2nd degree students can get licensed. Allnurses has a good visibility on search engines and your answers could help others ?

I've always though about travel nursing, this could be another option
