American Nurses in U.K

World UK

Updated:   Published

Hello Everyone!

It has been a long time since I have been here, so I hope that I am in the right place. I am thinking about nursing in London. All of my kids are adults and I love visiting the U.K. Has anyone worked in the NHS? If so, how was the experience? Thanks, in advance

Hi there!

I am UK citizen but US trained nurse living in California, moving back to the England in January. I have a couple of questions..

1. For the CBT, am I right in understanding this feels a bit more like a common sense type nursing test, vs a clinical practice/protocols, pharmacological exam? How heavily does it focus on NHS specific protocols and code of conduct? I was about to buy the Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical Procedures (I think thats the right??) but feel a bit overwhelmed by the magnitude of it! I know there are a million links on the NMC resource page but I'm just wondering if anyone has any specific info they've found really helpful and accurate, anything with videos or test prep questions? I'm happy to buy the textbook if that really is the best way to go but thought I'd ask first.

2. Has anyone else had any experience working in central Manchester (northern England) or know of anyone that does? I know they have some big teaching hospitals there connected to Manchester university, and I believe the Christie Foundation for oncology patients is there too. Just thought I'd see if anyone has worked in these facilities so I could maybe pick your brains. My specialties are critical care and organ donation coordination; would love to stick with those areas if possible.

3. Also wondering if anyone knows what the organ donor world is like in the UK or has worked in an organ donor type role? I can't write figure out if there is an organ donation network that operates as an entity outside of the hospitals and comes in to work to work locally with teams to retrieve organs and take them elsewhere or if all donations happen within their facilities? Any thoughts anyone?

Thanks so much!

Hi Becca,

There are a lot of available resources u can practice for the CBT. U only need Royal Marsden as a reference. Also before you write the CBT (theory)  and OSCE (which will Be the practical aspect of your test of competence and done in UK u must first be registered with the NMC and be authorized to test for it. U can email me for more  clarifications.

Hi Inikpi,

Yes, I am in the middle of my application to the NMC, currently trying to chase up my verification of licensure from the California Board of Registered Nursing that was supposed to get to the NMC and has been lost in space somewhere... But in anticipation of that being resolved I am trying to get prepared for the CBT because that will be the next step in my application. The OSCE prep I will do through the overseas program position I hope to obtain once I get there....

Hi Becca!:) I think I can help you with some of your questions. I just received my nursing pin from the NMC and I'm also a US to UK nurse (although I am basically a new grad as I only worked in the US for 4 months before moving)

The CBT is very easy. You should be able to pass it with minimal studying. I think the pass rate is like 99% LOL. With that being said, I googled "survey monkey nmc cbt test" and got a bunch of practice tests that were helpful. Study PRN I have also heard is good but I think you have to pay for that one.

I have a job offer from the Christie! But I haven't started working there yet. So I don't think I'd be much help there. If you want to connect more via email you can give me your email if you'd like! I can answer more q's about NMC registration if you need it. Best of luck

Hi Ana!!

Thanks so much for your helpful response! Very refreshing to hear that you found the CBT really straightforward. I would really love to chat more, thanks for offering that! I will send you a private message with my email. I would LOVE to hear more about your experience so far getting your position at the Christie - congratulations on that!

Just kidding... @app22 the website won't let me send a private message... it says I am allowed zero messages a day LOL. Maybe better luck on your end?
