American LPN to Ontario RPN

Published

Hi there,

I am in a frustrating situation. I took my LPN in Florida (long story). I am a Canadian that went down on a student visa with the hope of bridging to RN. I am back in Ontario working at my old job as a paramedic. Has anyone qualified for an RPN using the LPN education from the States? The Florida BON will let me write their exam, but will only certify me for 30 days because I do not have an American Social. Thank you in advance for any replies to my thread.

Hi there, I was wondering if someone out there would be able to answer me a question I have. I'll be graduating from a ADN-RN program in the USA in 5 months time, and I will then be able to work for a year as an RN in the US for one year. However, as I am only an international student in America, and I would only be able to work in America for 1 year after graduation on OPT, and then I will need to leave the country, and return to the UK where an ADN may not be recognized, or go back to college here in the States for a BSN. Anyway, do you think I would be able to use my American RN to work as a RPN in Canada. I know I would not be allowed to work as a RN in Canada as I would need to have a BSc in nursing, but it would be nice to work there while I go back to college part time for my degree. Also, even though the Canadian government might not issue me a skilled visa to work as an RPN in Canada, I have read that there are other visas available for in demand unskilled workers that require less than 2 years training. I know that RPNs are not unskilled, but I feel that they may come under this category.

The only way really is to apply and see what the province say. However you need to be aware that many provinces are having employment issues and yes things may change by the time you get sorted but you are looking at several months going through the process and then find a employer willing to get a LMO (labour Marketing Opinion) and meeting work permit requirements (you will need to have a medical)

LPN is on the list last time I looked

Thanks Silverdargon, I would prefer to stay in the US till I get my BSN, but it's too expensive. My ADN degree here in America might not be good enough for the UK, so I think Canada would be a good option for me as they all speak English and the pay is ok. Maybe things will pick up by the time I get my degree and OPT completed and there will be more jobs available in the provinces.

I am currently taking pre-reqs at BTC for the LPN program, and right now there is a 1-1.5 year waitlist. So, for the poster wanting to do it here, instead of in BC, it may not be worth it, with the US exchange and almost the same length of time wait.
