Am I wasting my time applying to these colleges?

Published

Im a high school senior. I got a 1260 out of 2400 on my sat's that I took twice (how ironic). anyways, i have applied to two county colleges for nursing. I want to apply to 3 colleges.. but two of the colleges I've talked to told me that I need to meet the SAT requirements to be able to get into their nursing program. I need a 1020 combined Verbal Reading and Math and I only have an 860. I dont want to take the SATs again because Im not a test taker and I think its stupid that the SAT's determine whether you can make it into the program or not. I wish they would reconsider other things like the essay and your GPA that you have. I have a 3.3 gpa out of 4.0 scale and I just want to know am I wasting money and time to apply to colleges where I already got the answer im looking for.. the admissions peopel saying "You need to meet the requirements to get accepted" or should I still apply and maybe a miracle will happen?

Someone give me some advice =/

I also dont have the big bucks to actually go to college but by applying I feel If I get an application that says I can be accepted, then I have proven to myself that im able to handle college.

And lastly, I can most likely get into the colleges, its just the major I want to get into I wont be able to enter because of my SAT score =/

HELP!!

take pre reqs and apply at schools that have waiting time.... you just graduated so dont worry too much about it.... take those pre reqs ASAP apply and mean while go your GE's

Since when are community colleges concerned about SAT scores? I'd say that if the school specifically tells you that you are not qualified for their program, don't apply. But DO apply for the long shots. You never can tell who ELSE is applying at the same time. Some semesters have very high scorers, others unusually low!

thats what im saying. maybe i would get really lucky and have the opportunity to get into the program. but that luck comes very rare. and i can get into a community college but i really wanted the college experience and i wanted my BSN.. not a diploma =/

TeeGuneys23,

I am confused - will the community college let you in to their school but not the nursing program? I thought most schools made you take pre-req's before you could be admitted to the nursing program regardless of your SAT score? How does this work?

Where I went to school (Michigan State) you had to first get into the school first - then your second year you applied to the Nursing school separate after you had taken a bunch of pre-req's.

About the college experience? Go for it! I was a resident assistant at a big top 10 university - lived on campus for 4 years, met my husband at school and had a great time meeting new people and discovering who I was a little bit more. However it can be distracting at times, but overall I think it was a very good things for me to do.

If money is an issue though - I totally understand taking classes at a community college. Especially if you want to get some of the easy general education credits out of the way. However, there is amazing financial aid out there that might but a 4 year college more in your reach.

If your dream is to be a Nurse - don't let anything get in your way! I wish I was your age going to school for the first time! Now I am an old lady going back after I already have a degree and let me tell you it is not fun :)

There are 4 year colleges out there that don't even count the SATs, or consider them optional. Most of them are private and more expensive than state schools but they might be worth looking into. Don't forget, the more money a school costs, usually, the more they give away in the way of grants and financial aid. They have to compete with cheaper schools. So dont be put off by the price tag, fill out the FAFSA and see what you qualify for. Good luck, and dont give up!! There is a school for you somewhere.

At my school, if you have a certain number of credits ( I think it's 30 semester credits), they don't even look at your SAT's or high school grades. You can start out taking prereqs at a community college, take the 30 credits necessary, and then transfer to a 4 year BSN program where they'll only count your college classes. Good luck!

Have you thought about taking the ACT instead of the SAT? Find out what the schools require for that. Personally, I did sooo much better on the ACT since it is broken down into 4 sections: Reading, math, verbal and sci reasoning.

Quite a few CC's will either require an SAT/ACT or a college placement test for admission into the school. Specific program requirements might be different.

Although it looks as though some school go by the SAT (which i've never really heard of) a lot of other school go by the TEAS among other exams (if it's a private school) I would say apply to the school regardless if its a long shot. But in the mean time, the best thing you can do it start taking those pre-reqs. Don't procrastinate, take them right away. It's great that you are so motivated while still in high school. Keep it up!!

well im not really sure how majoring in nursing works at a 4 year college.. i figured you just learn all diff stuff within ur four years. I really dont want to go to a community college but its very much a possibility I will be. But i have applied to atleast 3 other colleges as well. just a very stressful time =/
