I will start the Respiratory Therapy this summer . My first choice was nursing but the wait is so long that i decided to try the RT program. I have read on here before that some RT's go back to school to become nurses. RT seems very interesting to me as does nursing so do you guys think I am waisting my time , should i just wait the 2-3 years for a spot in nursing or should i go for the RT program?? I am interested in hearing from all of you, I know I'm the one that has to make the decision, but it's nice to hear others oppinions as well. I am a 26 years old male , hope that helps!!!
TazziRN, RN 6,487 Posts Feb 13, 2007 Go for it as long as you have an interest in it. It can be easier to get into a nursing program if you already have your foot in the door in another capacity. If you have no interest in RT, however, I suggest you skip it or you will not do the job well.

I never plan to stop furthering my education so who knows I might go into nursing later in life anyways , I read in here that some are 50 and graduating from nursing so hey i can do it too!!!! Another thing to consider: when you do get into nrsg, you will have an excellent background in the area of resp ther and might use your exp and schooling as a springboard to further go into the area of nurse anesthetist. At any rate, attending some kind of medical tng for the next 2-3 yr wait is much better than working outside of any medical field. Good luck to you!

Feb 13, 2007 My mom is in RT school right now too and i just finished LPN school...sometime i wish i would have done that instead and then went to my RN program since she's making WAY better money as an RT than i do as an LPN...BUT...its going to boil down to if you actually want to be an RT...because if you really dont then, you wont do very good at your job or you will hate your job. Me personally that's why i chose LPN school first because i wanted RN but the wait was forever and i have a little boy i need to take care of so being an LPN and working while getting my RN was better in the long run for me and my family!
