Am I still a Graduate Nurse?

I'm from Houston, TX

I got my license in July and graduated with a ADN. Unfortunately, Houston started to go with MAGNET status where all other hospitals are competing against each other and increasing their standards to a BSN.

I'm willing to go out of city/state to get a job. No experience as an RN but an optical technician. I talked to a recruiter up in Austin, TX and said after 6 months I will not be considered as a GN...

How do I get a job if I can't apply for internships anymore? I'm confused. I've been applying everywhere with rejection letters coming back. Any suggestion where people can apply at?

I would seek out teaching hospitals in your area if I were you. Each area is different and I have no knowledge of the market in Texas whatsoever. However, here in Georgia, the teaching hospitals provide more of a warm welcome to new-grad RNs than other places. See if the same holds true for your area. Good luck!

Try Laredo TX. I heard they just started a RN residency program...you may have to resort to rural health areas as well. San Antonio teaching hospital is also a magnet status so if you are applying in San Antonio with ADN at the teaching hospital they make you sign this contract that you have to go back and do your BSN and you have to be enrolled in a BSN program w/in two years to stay. New grads in San Antonio, TX who can't get jobs usually go to areas south of San Antonio like Laredo.

I understand your dilemma. I also got my license in July & have my ADN. I've applied to intern spot after intern spot with no luck. My next step is to apply to home health & start that way possibly. I've tried recently some skilled nursing & rehab centers but no feedback yet. I have heard (not sure if this is correct or not) that after getting experience you can still apply for intern positions for the specialty of your interest. Only tricky thing is to get that 1st job to get the experience.
