OK, so I need some advice. I'm very seriously considering my second career as nursing. I'm 45, and am very successful in a marketing position. I'm burned out and have always wanted to be a nurse. My background is business. I have some college level science, but I pulled my transcripts and need to take about 8 courses to get my prelims in. I'm enrolled in classes this spring, will still be working full time and am nervous about balancing work and school. My husband is very supportive, and wants me to do what makes me happy. My goal is to enroll in a masters for non-nursing in Summer of 2012. I'll graduate with a masters and can take the RN test. Am I too old to do this? I would graduate in late 2013 ( six semester program) at age 48.
Would really appreciate any advice and if I can realistically have a second career at nursing at this age.
Thanks!
I just turned 50 and am 110 on the wait list for the nursing program which means Jan 2012 I start at 51. I will be finished when I'm 53 God willing. I encourage you to go for your dream! I have loved every minute of it. I figure my grandfather is 96 and just celebrated his 70th anniversary... our family has very healthy longevity all around. So my intention is to work for 20 years. My dad hasn't retired yet and is 76.... we'll see how it goes.. very exciting!!!!
I just finished my first year and I am 42. With my very supportive husband, I have the luxury of not having to work at all yet- although the financial life is strained. For most of the peole I know- this is a consideration (work/finances). I have an undergrad already and have always been a good student but the amount of studying and discipline for this has been more than I ever imagined. I think you need to be prepared for that. You do truly have to be prepared to devote most of your time to this-especially if getting good grades is more of a struggle- no matter what your age. Personally, I have found that being a little older has been a help in terms of experience, maturity, focus. Good luck- it is a great change to make!
i was in middle management and riffed after 31 years. i didn't want to retire, so i chose nursing because of my interest and the flexibility offered. i entered an Accelerated BSN program. i will graduate in july at age 52 and looking forward to a second career.
I finished school in May 09 at the age of 49. I am now 51 and working full time on a Med/Surg floor and love it. My husband will be 65 next month and is in his last semester of RN school. He will graduate in May and start over as an entry level RN. Are you kidding me? 45 is young. Go for it, you will never regret it. I sure do not. Plus we have so much to talk about with each other.
