Am I Qualified?

Specializes in Surgery.

I currently hold a master's of science in nursing in the clinical nurse leader track, as well as a post-master's certificate in nursing education. I also hold my CNL and CNE certifications. I briefly worked in med-surg, but I have spent the majority of my career in the operating room as a circulating RN. I recently began working part-time as a clinical instructor in a BSN program. I have taken students in their Fundamentals course for their first clinical rotation in med-surg, and more recently, I worked as clinical faculty for a Community Health course (although it was completely virtual due to Covid). My dean is now asking if I would be interested in serving as clinical faculty for a critical care. He claims that my OR experience qualified me for that position, but I am very doubtful. I do not consider OR to be a critical care area, and I worry that if I take the position, I would be doing a huge disservice to the students. Obviously, I would have the staff nurses serving as preceptors, but I still don't know if I feel quite right about taking the position. Any thoughts or feedback is greatly appreciated.

I guess I would want more information. I would want to review the curriculum, what you would be responsible for and what the rotation would look like. Chances are anyone doing clinicals in critical care aren't going to be terribly hands-on. Mostly observing.

Find out more info before you decide.

Specializes in Occupational Health.

Unless your Dean is a healthcare professional (I.e. MD, NP, PA, RN, etc.) he doesn't have a clue about what is involved in any nursing specialty much less what's involved in clinicals

Specializes in retired LTC.

Your inner feelings are talking out loud to you. You have serious misgivings, and when that happens, it usually behooves the person to listen up closely.

It's good that you want to do what's best for the students rather than have regrets later on.

Your not actually teaching the didactic correct?  just doing site visits as their supervising nurse???  you would probably be fine
