Am I hired?

I had my interview yesterday. It was very brief and I think I did bad. After my interview, the manager asked for my driver's license, s.s card and RN card to make a copy of...but told me he'd know his decision by Friday. Is it routine to make a copy of these documents from candidates or am I hired? I'm so nervous and can't wait for it to be Friday!!!!

You're not hired until you have received an offer and accepted it.

Best of luck to you.

I would think he took the copies to run a background check. If so, it doesn't mean you're hired, but it's better than a handshake and a "don't call us, we'll call you."

Hoping for the best!

Yes, it is normal for a potential employer to retain a copy of your drivers license, nursing license and SS card. They aren't going to make an offer until they see what comes of your background check, so sit tight for a few days. If they really hated you, I think they just would have showed you the door and NOT asked for your ID.

In Canada that would never happen. We're responsible for obtaining and providing potential employers with a criminal records check and a sex offenders' registry check before being employed. The RCMP will do it for about $30. There is NO WAY on this earth I would just hand over my driver's license and social insurance card to anybody. But then it seems to me that Canada has much more stringent privacy laws.

Agreed. Most likely you are being seriously pursued as a candidate and background checks are being done prior to an offer being extended to you.

I personally haven't seen this done as I've always gotten offers first and then a background check and I've always been told my employment is "contingent" upon a successful background check and drug screen.

Good luck.

A lot of hospitals are now asking for background check info on applications. I have never been asked for my ID but I have been asked for my license and SSN. And these were for jobs that I never received offers for. Hopefully you get the job! Good luck!

Thank you all for replying!

twentytenRN: I agree with you...in the past, I've also gotten offers first before I was asked to provide all my legal documents. So when the guy asked me for the documents to make copies and came back to tell me "I'll know my decision by friday"...I wasn't sure if this procedure is routinely done or if he's already made a decision to hire me but just wants to wait for a clear background before breaking the news to me. (???) The wait is killing me!!!

Has anyone ever had an employer make a copy of your legal documents at the end of your interview and DIDN'T get offered the position in the end? (Assuming your background chk good)

It's done this way in a lot of psych places. If they are considering hiring you, they will check you out head to toe first (background, drugs, references, etc.). If you want the job, you have to do it...because only after you're all clear will they make the formal job offer.

OP: it's not an offer until you receive it verbally (and a specific job offer, not just random chatter about working there) or in writing. Good luck!

I have had employers ask for all my info (for a background check) and then not hire me. I know I don't have anything in my background so that can't be it. I'm not even sure they ran the background check. Maybe they just ask for the info just in case they decide to hire you and then run the background check. Good luck! Let us know if you got the job!

I agree with twentytenRN. I just got offered a job today and they told me to come over tomorrow for a drug screen and PPD test. They will also do the background check after that. So I'm thinking that they are just keeping this in their records just in case you will be offered the job. Good Luck to you!
