Am I Doing it For the Right Reasons?

Published

Hi everyone. This is my first post, I came here because I've been attending information sessions on 2nd bachelor's BSN programs in my area.

I will need to take 8 pre-reqs including A&P and biochemistry before I can apply for any program.

I will try to make this quick.

I am worried that I might not be cut out for nursing, or that I am going into it for the wrong reasons and will not make it through the pre-reqs to even apply for a program.

I have worked in social services for the past five years--the Muscular Dystrophy Association and before that, an international relief organization always in administrative roles.

I am thinking nursing because, in this order of importance:

1. I love working with people and helping people.

2. I like fast paced, always busy, dead-on-your-feet tired at the end of the night jobs.

3. *I think* I have a lot of qualities that make a good nurse--good people schools, hard worker, good communicator, a genuine desire to help others.

4. I am sooooooooo sick of being stuck in a cubicle all day.

5. I am sick of the low pay of the social service jobs I've done since college.

6. I want to challenge myself.

I am, however, absolutely horrendous at math and science. My current degrees are in Spanish and sociology...in order to graduate (six years ago) I only needed one science (I think I took geology) and one math (I don't even remember what I took).

I am deathly afraid of the pre-req classes and am wondering if this is a sign that perhaps nursing isn't for me.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

I think if you apply yourself you should not have any problems. In larger universities there is usually a good support system, such as tutors and help sessions that can help you prepare. Sounds like you have some good qualities and would make a great nurse.

The pre- reqs are not an indicator of nursing school. I was terrible w/ pre- calc and terrified of the med class. It was a breeze. I have learned that if you want it bad enough you can do anything.

One other thing that helps me when taking those fun prereqs (A&P, Micro, Psych) is looking up the professor on RateMyProfessors.com - Professor Reviews and Ratings . You tell the website your state, college, and it shows all the profs. No, it's not perfect, but I've found for the most part that highly rated profs on that website correspond to good profs when I have them in class. This does not mean that the profs are easy (the class average in A&P was ~65%), but it can help you avoid the total bozos.
