Alvin Community College ADN Fall 2011

Published

Hi there, any of you applying to the fall 2011 program?

yes thanks a lot Jaed!Very informative. I also was wondering if we can use a calculator on our dosage exams that we are going to have throughout the semester?? Also had anyone signed up to get CPR certified? Im trying to get all my "dirty work" done asap!

You both are welcome!

You can use a 'basic' calculator on the dosage exams. They even provided them if we needed to borrow one for the exam.

@ jaed, I know every semester differentiates, but are clinicals usually once a week or twice? And how many hours are they usually scheduled? Do they give you the location as well as dates and times at orientation? Also, how many days are the skill labs? Thanks

@marcopolo, I'm taking my bls course July 16 :-/ it was the soonest and least expensive I could find but I don't think it's due until the 23rd of august

I did my CPR class in Jan this year at the EMS station on Egret Bay. You can go to the American Red Cross CPR site and they will tell you where you can take a class in your area.

Our clinicals are posted in the Fall 2011 class schedules. They will be either W or Thurs if I remember correctly. They wont be both because when you look at the other classes (like you are trying to make a schedule) the classes will line up to where you have a class/ lab every M T W/TH (and F if you take dosage). :)

Thanks for the clinical info sunshyn... About the CPR, the acceptance packet says the only course they will take is American hearth association. ACC offers it for around $65 but I found it at another college closer to me for $45 so figured I would save the 20 bucks plus my gas and take it here :-)

That's correct. I meant AHA not ARC. That's what I have, it was only $4X as well. I don't remember the exact amount.

@tx.nic , Clinicals are once a week and our time was 6:30 a.m. To 12:30 p.m., 6 hours. We did not actually begin working in the hospital until I believe March. So There is about a 6 to 8 week period of having clinical days in the lab at school before going into the hospital. This time allows you to learn skills and to validate that you know the skill (also called "check-off") with the instructor prior to using them in the hospital. There was a total of about 8 ( no more than 10) clinical (hospital) days for the entire semester

Make sure that the CPR class is of the American Heart Association AND for healthcare providers.

Awsome, clinicals being half a day makes things much easier for me. I was stressing getting a sitter to pick my kids up after daycare and waiting til I got home. lol. Now I can get them. :)

Thanks... I was stressing too... I was thinking we were going to have clinicals 2x a week 12 hours a day. I guess because I've heard of other people/schools doing them that way. Thy makes be feel alot better :-)

There are a lot more clinical days in subsequent classes, just not the 1st class!

Still number 2 :(College of the Mainland people got their acceptance letters and I was hoping to move up but no luck
