Why hello there, fellow students!
You can call me Cedeno, and I'll be applying for the MDC nursing program for fall 2013! I've been excited for awhile now, especially since MDC (and all its red tape) has delayed my intended apply date twice (originally Fall 2012, then Spring 2013). Ah, but no worries!
Right now I'm taking my last bit of classes before applying: A&P 2 w/lab, Micro, and Critical Thinking/Ethics. I've seen many nursing students this semester-- which is wonderful-- but at the same time I think two words when I meet another pre-nursing student: "Awesome! " and "Competition!
" (Not seriously, but in a jokey kind of way.)
Once admitted, I'd love to form a study group. Size isn't quite so much the priority as cohesiveness is (though size counts!). I'd love study mates who like to utilize chats like Google talk, Skype, Kik, etc. for times when perhaps we'd like to study something but cannot make it to a physical location.
I'm a visual and auditory learner, so I love highlighters, dry-erase boards, and discussing questions together to ensure everyone understands rather than one person offering up the answer and others just accepting it without knowing.
Ah! I've managed to turn this into an ad for study mates! I'm just excited and hope there are other potential classmates here on AN. Please pop in and say hello! Let's talk GPAs, TEAS scores, whatever!
....Also if you take the TEAS twice is it highest score used or last test taken?
GOOD LUCK!
Stats:
Expected final science GPA: 3.67
TEAS score: n/a
JUNE 10?! CAN'T WAIT! I spoke to a girl in the program now and I figured I would share the random info that I got from her...
Picking classes: once you are accepted, they give you choices ... sequence A, B, or C. A and B are in the morning and C is in the afternoon. You pick what general times you want and then you pick your classes like you normally would through MDC, but they must agree with your sequence (I thought this was weird, but I guess it will make more sense when our time comes). We pick our sequence every semester.
Cost: She said she's spending about $1200 a semester, plus books. The first semester they slammed her with about $600 in books many of which she ordered on amazon), but the second semester she barely spent anything on books bc they re-used the same ones from semester 1.
Working while in the FT program: 1-2 days a week is definitely doable, but a little crazy.
Uniform: Hunter green. Buy from a cheaper store (ie UA scrubs) for your class days. She said she hasn't had a problem doing that yet. For clinicals, you need the expensive ones from the college.
I posted about a week ago that people who are south of Coral Way automatically go to Homestead campus (I was told by 2 advisors). She lives around Sunset and 147 ave and was sent to Medical Campus because there was more space at the Medical Campus.
Hope this helps. I'll share if I hear anything else that is noteworthy! :)
Dayli you are definitely fine with an 87! Look back at MDC 2013 Spring and people in the low 80s were getting in during the FIRST round of emails. My friend told me the average scores of people she knows in the FT program are 77-84...of course there are some people above and below that.
I was feeling really nervous when I first put in my application in February, but between all my AN research and talking to people in the program, I feel pretty confident. Plus, worrying is only gonna drive me crazy and make my life more complicated than it needs to be. From what I've read on here, I think everyone is going to get into the programs they want. Everyone has good scores. Let's consider ourselves lucky; we are getting the same education as the private school people at a FRACTION of the cost!

Carissa,
Thank you so much for the info on the sequence of classes. I hope that the higher powers above hear you, and that we all get in. I also try not to go crazy thinking about it, because I will do just that, GO CRAZY! Lol I hope we are all class mates!
Question for everyone: when are you guys taking the CPR class, I'm going to sign up soon and was thinking maybe we can do it together? Let me know.
Thank you for your encouraging words, especially to Tati.lara and CarissaHalo, but I'm still freaking out! Anyone else applying for transitional???? I also live in west Kendall so hopefully we not only get accepted, but accepted to same campus so that we can carpool! Good Luck again everyone!

Hi, I don't know if I should take the CPR class because I already have my card, but it will expire on December 12 of 2013. What should I do?
I'm going the CPR class on Sunday (ugh) June 23 9 A - 3 P @ Homestead campus. I'm trying to get as many hours at work as I can before I start the program...so Sunday it is
Is anyone doing a CPR class that is not through MDC? I think they are cheaper and some are partially online, but I don't want any issues with MDC saying that the class is not acceptable or anything like that. I also figure I might meet some people starting the MDC program while I'm there, which would be cool.
lgv2004 - I read somewhere on MDC website that you need a CPR card valid August 2013 - December 2014 (start of the program - finish). I don't see why there would be a problem for you to renew it closer to your renewal date, but it might be a good idea to take care of it now before you start with the craziness of school. If not, I would contact the school directly to be safe.

Ahhh I just double checked and saw that the AO orientation is July 23 at 9:00am. They must have updated it today. I am so excited :)
Good luck everyone!
