I just relocated to MN from a large metro area. I am an ER nurse for over ten years and also an experienced midwife. I applied for ER nursing at Allina and HCMC. I'm being considered for both. I'm undecided about which way to go since I'm not familiar with the MN healthcare system. I'm also hoping to continue my Midwifery career and I know HCMC has a large midwifery practice. Surprisingly HCMC is offering a slightly higher pay but it's further away (20 mins) from where I live than Allina is (5 mins tops). Let me add that Allina has 12 hrs, which is lovely but HCMC only 8 hrs. Any assistance to resolve my conundrum is appreciated.

Sorry, this MN forum moves slow. So what did you decide on?
Still unsure. I don't know the hospitals in the area.

HCMC is the "county hospital". I found it a great place to work, if you don't mind getting your hands dirty. Its a teaching hospital and the Doctors by and large were great, as were the rest of the staff. I haven't worked there in 10 years. It IS downtown, so the traffic is a pain, but HCMC has a big parking ramp. Again, this was my experience. I never worked for the Allina system but it has a good reputation. There are several hospitals in the allina system...AbbottNorthwestern, which is in uptown Minneapolis, Unity and Mercy which are in suburbs, United Hospital in St. Paul and several small hospitals in the area.
I think you have 2 good options here. Good Luck.

While I have no experience with HCMC, I work for Allina and I am so pleased. They are excellent to their staff and I believe they give amazing care to each and every patient that comes through!
Thanks all for the comments. I'm leaning toward HCMC because it's the pace that I'm used to and better benefits. I might end up picking up shifts at Allina also. Let's see how it goes. Thanks!

I have worked for Allina for two years and it is a great company. I don't work in the hospital so I'm not sure what it's like there- thiugh I will say that the location of Abbott is a bit of a deterrent- particularly if you work night shifts. But I like working for them as a company.
Howrver, I actually receive my healthcare services through an HCMC clinic and cannot say enough good things about the doctors, nurses, staff in general. I've never had a bad experience in care.
because it is a public health system, you get a little of everything- lots of diversity! I think it would be exciting to work there.
Honestly I'd have a hard time choosing if I was presented with both options so good luck :)
How do the benefits differ between the two places? Pension, healthcare e.t.c. Maybe that will be the tie breaker.
