All Men Shift

Nurses Men

Published

I noticed a huge difference in the past month in regards to the unit culture when we had an all male shift this past month. When working with all males, the shift just seems way way better.

The environment was so pleasant because no one was flipping out because the floors weren't mopped on our shift, no one was throwing a fit because there were not enough small sized gloves in the isolation cart, we focused on RN life saving interventions. I mean two patients coded, both were brought back. During the code everyone was calm, positive, people were laughing, and just all around positive.

I actually left work thinking wow this is a great team to work with.

However, when its a mostly female shift the focus is completely different. I remember a code when women were screaming for atropine, and not wanting to do chest compression because their back hurt. I remember getting talked down to because the room was a mess after the code. I remember the day time supervisor throwing a fit because the pt closet was unorganized.

I really like working with an all male shift. My god it is so much better.

Men do not belong in nursing...

Too many problems involving sexual issues. Men have much higher levels of testosterone, that's a fact. I'm not saying men are not good nurse, some are great it's just that there are too many problems involved dealing with male nurses. Just look at all the rape cases and law suits involving male nurses. The cost to hospitals are in the hundreds of millions.. Men are men you can't change their sexual needs..

Just .... wow. I was sitting here quietly eating my popcorn, and chuckling to myself at the trolling, then this bit of venom hit the thread .... just yikes. In my ICU there is almost always more guys than gals, but a mix is nice, but the OP is right. Errr I plead the 5th yer honor.

Cheers

Bros before Hos! Errr that's right the 5th yer honor.

I work as an ED tech at my hospital and I had a similar shift with all men including myself and it was rare. I was also in a similar situation like the OP, but it was a male nurse screaming for EPI!.

You're a new poster and your posts all seem to involve pretty much the same theme.

I don't know if something has happened to you that has distorted the way you view males but I strongly disagree with your opinion. If anything, nursing needs more men.

(partial quote)

Normal women and men tend to take care of their sexual needs when they're off the clock. It's not something people usually do at work. If it does occur during company time chances are that it's consentual, even though I seriously doubt that the supply closet or on-call room is as frequently utilized as is seen on Grey's Anatomy :lol2:

Most men aren't sexual predators/rapists. Some are but the vast majority aren't. I don't know how you got your bleak outlook on our XY colleagues but I find your opinion of them offensive.

Do you really thing a family would be happy having their 19 year old daughter bathed or cath by a 50 year old male nurse. By the way I don't think many men would want a man giving them an enema.

Not all female teenagers or all male patients have one and the same opinion. Patients are individuals. Are you sure that you aren't projecting and generalizing your own feelings on this matter onto large groups of patients? The best way to find out what each individual patient wishes for himself or herself is to talk to them and to listen to them, leaving any potential personal biases out of the encounter.

skydog, I believe you might benefit from some time discussing your feelings on gender differences with a counselor/therapist.
