Nurses Activism

It's pretty hard to rebut anything this congressman says. He makes an argument for the right as well as for the left. I only wish we didn't have such a need to preserve the health insurance industry at our own health expense:

Cigna states, "CIGNA, a global health service company, takes its corporate social responsibility (CSR) very seriously.

We embrace it as an opportunity to reflect and extend our mission to improve health, well-being and security for all those we serve."

If they acted on this rather than deny care the physicians stated in writing to them there wouldn't be this debate.

But they chose profit over giving a fine young teen a chance to live.

My sister is a dialysis patient. She is down on the list for a transplant because she is doing well. Part of that is because she follows her diet, medication, and exercise regimen perfectly. (Thanks for the advice on renal diet books Jnette!)

I was refused to test as donor because I was on Inderal for migraine prevention. So I stopped taking it.

Now they tell me I'm too old.

I did get to donate bone marrow to someone I don't know. Still in the registry.

She was in a vegetative state. She had leukemia. Why wasn't she at St. Jude's. They don't turn anyone away.

I've been in dialysis for over 15 years. NO patient that I know of has been refused a transplant because they couldn't pay. And yes, I'm aware that Medicare pays for HD but not in the first few months. And I do know for a fact that one patient has received 3 kidneys over the years. I believe there are 3 sides to every story, one story from the insurance company, one from the family and then the truth.

Where was the transplant team in this instance? Where were the social workers helping this patient? I can't believe that she was denied because her insurance company wouldn't pay. I just don't believe it. That was my contention in my answer.

Are you paying for someone's healthcare or their insurance? Are you an organ donor, do you donate blood, are you a bone marrow donor. Talk is cheap. Actions speak louder than words.

Every time and every place I've asked those who want UHC to take on a person and pay for their healthcare insurance or their medical bills that person has a reason why they can't do it.

As for this country being able to afford medical care for every person in the this country that might have been true at one time but it gets less and less true every day.

And I certainly haven't forgotten Maslow. That's another question I never get answered when questioning those who think we should have UHC. Somehow they forget the hungry and cold.

A single payor system run by our government at this point won't work.... That's the simple truth. Many do want or can't see it. I feel it's my duty to keep that truth alive as long as I can.

This is my first post though I've been reading here for quite a while & love AN.

I just felt I had to provide this information: Medicare covers end stage renal diesease no matter the persons age. It was written into the original medicare bill

Medicare is a health insurance program for:

* People 65 years of age and older.

* Some people with disabilities under 65 years of age.

* People with End-Stage Renal Disease or ESRD (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant).

Here is the direct link to the gov web site providing this info

So, ESKD patients may receive government run health care in the form of Medicare.

Medicare doesn't typically start covering ESRD until the 4th month of dialysis treatments. Some people get transplanted before ever going on dialysis. This info is right at the top of page 11 from YOUR OWN LINK. LOL

Thank you for this post.

I am very glad my sister is getting the dialysis she needs.

She loves her nurses and techs. She is active in her church, a wonderful grandmother, and enjoys bowling.

Yup. She's doing as well as can be expected considering thrice weekly dialysis.

IF the UK is so great why did you opt to be here in the USA.? Because you could make much more money as a nurse here?

I do not like your hostile tone. Why I came to the United States is none of your concern and irrelevant to the discussion.

The universal coverage systems are the sustainable systems.

Asking another person to pick up the entire insurance costs for another is contrary to the concept of insurance. Insurance by definition is a social product where we each pay a little to protect against unmanagable loss for our self as well as other members of the risk pool. IOW we collectively share the costs.

Again for every sob story you can give I have one.

Where is your compassion?

I find your flippancy offensive. I hope that none of the nurses currently caring for my daughter with leukemia have that kind of attitude. Oh and don't worry. We have insurance. An HMO (not Cigna). I sure hope we don't get denied any care like Nataline did.

I just find it hard to understand why you would leave such a great system for such a poor one. And why you would want to change us?

NO WE don't. We don't share costs if we don't buy it.

You don't know what attitude the nurses caring for your daughter have? Shouldn't you be checking into that. The patient in this instance was in a vegetative state. She had a bone marrow transplant that went bad. We do better by our pets in this country. Why subject that child to more pain? And prolong her misery. Is that compassionate? Have you seen old people moan for hours on end just to LIVE? Have you seen decubs to the sacrum and tube feedings with diarrhea in that decub? Have you seen chemo patients vomit until they break ribs? You call that compassionate?

How could this patient have been a good surgical candidate? How could any surgeon agree to operate on this patient unless they have a boat payment due.

I don't believe the whole story has been told here. I believe it's a good proganada story for an issue someone believes in. As I've said many times for every story you have I have another with the opposite POV.

I sure hope onekidneynurse didn't go to a publicly funded nursing school. I find it ironic that some people who utilize cheap, public subsidized education feel the government should not also offer cheap, publicly healthcare.

I am sad to find out that there are nurses out there who are not only uncompassionate but vocal about it. Compassion is so vital in nursing.
