I was wondering if anyone may have some school suggestions for me. Im currently trying to find a decent LPN school to attend so ive looked into Akron Institute and Brown Mackie in Canton. Im not hearing good thing about neither one of those school ,so any info would be great.. Thanks
I am a current student and can also test to the complete instruction you are taught at AI and the clinicals are at the best hospitals. I have argued before that if there is any kind of problem with passing that one should consider the committment of the student, time committment and maturity. There are some students in my classes that are struggling, but they also don't come to class regularly. You cannot do an accelerated course and miss half the classes. If you are struggling the teachers are more than willing to take time out of their schedule to help a student or come in on off hours to help. Also, AI uses "ATI testing". This from what I hear (based on postings here on allnurses) is one of the best around for preparing you to pass NCLEX. Given that AI have a near 100% pass rate, I would have a hard time basing the program on one person's problem with passing.
Thanks for the responses on AI. What entrance exam do they use to qualify candidates? I also heard there is a waiting list. Is this true?
The entrance exam is TEAS. As far as waiting list go, they don't have a list per se, but they only take 30 per group coming in. The 30 is chosen based on test scores and interviews. Good luck
They have new classes starting 3 times a year. If I calculate it right, the next class will be starting in May, however, don't quote me on that. It may not be May, but it will be around then, because the class that is finishing up now, should be done middle to late April and USUALLY there is no real large break between classes. (I think there maybe one in at the end of April, and then there is a couple of weeks at the end of December). Good luck.

So, do they not factor GPA into the equation? Do they require you to take the entrance test on campus or can you take it at a local testing center if you don't currently live in the area?
Brown Mackie is a very bad school. Everyone I know that has gone there or is going there wishes that they hadn't. The Akron Institute is a good school. I know a couple of people that have graduated there and my husband is currently attending their RN program. They seem good. Kent and Stark do not have LPN programs. Honestly, the only benefit I see for even attending an LPN program is that most of the bridge to RN programs around here do not have a wait list, so its a way to bi-pass a 2-3 year wait for an RN program. I speak from experience. I am graduating an LPN program in the Akron area in 8 weeks and there are no jobs.

A GPA to get in? I don't think so. You do not have to have any college experience to get into their program. The only other thing about GPA that might be an issue is if you have a Gen Ed course you took at another school, but failed it, then you would have to retake it. TEAS is the entrance exam, and it is offered at the school, I dont know if you can take it at a testing center(I highly doubt it though). It is a small school so everything is done in one building (with the exception of clinicals and a couple of gen eds that are offered online if you want to take them online).
I am currently in the LPN program at Brown Mackie - don't do it. I am thinking about transferring. They are twice the cost and I wish I read more about them before I enrolled. I have heard NOTHING positive and people laugh at me when I tell them where I go because they have such a horrible reputation. I went to Stark to look around, try them - it looks like an awesome school!

I am a graduate of AI....I did not spend any money to do a review course, but many of my class did. I passed and so did 2 others who didnt take reviews (not everyone has taken the test yet...we are real new grads)
When you graduate from ANY accelerated programs you feel that you aren't prepared, but I am living proof that you retain more than you realize. All the information comes at you fast and hard. And from what I understand when you graduate from any program regardless...you can feel unprepared, it all depends on the person.
To answer your question about pre reqs...No they do not require pre reqs to get into the program. You do have to take courses such as Psych, composition, etc...but they are offered there if you need them and you are considered a nursing student regardless.
There is a thread about AI on this board somewhere that should be near the top. Let me know if you have anymore questions.
Good luck
