Night shift nurse required to fill call-off vacancies and scheduling
I was orienting for my new night shift job recently, 7a - 7p, and learned that I am responsible to find coverage for the next shift (nurse or CNA) should someone call off. Usually call offs occur at 5:00 a.m. so that means I get to scramble and wake people up to find coverage while passing morning meds and completing my nurses notes and other duties. Oh, and we are also required to schedule/assign each nurse and CNAs to one of the 5 floors. At the other facilities I've worked at, there was a scheduler and it was their duty to find coverage. Is is a more common practice than I realize and am I wrong that it bothers me? I'm not comfortable waking people up at 5:00 a.m. to see if they can come in.

No More LPN programs
I am an LPN new grad and had planned on going back for my RN. Now I'm struggling with the decision to bridge to RN since no one will hire unless you have experience. If no one will hire me as an LPN with no experience, I'm afraid that I won't be hired as an RN without experience either. I'm worried to rack up more student loan debt only to be left in the same position. I'm sure there are others out there that feel the same way. It's very frustrating.

Are LPN's being phased out?
I don't know about a union. All I can say is that I received great care from the LPN's at this facility, and at times they were more caring than the RN's.

Are LPN's being phased out?
Just last week an Akron, Ohio area hospital eliminated 70 LPN positions immediately. Some of the LPN's had worked there over 20 years. The hospital claims they won't see a deficit in the quality of client care by this decision. Really??? So those 70 nurses were standing around and not contributing anything to the workload? That's almost laughable.

Is $18,000 overpriced for an LPN program in NE Ohio?
I think you and I are considering the same school. I wish we could find out more information from students that graduated from there. I like that they offer certifications in several areas which would give us an edge in the job market. It is considerably more but I really like the school. I live in the Tallmadge/Kent Ohio area by the way.

I wish you the best. It has to be very disheartening to work so hard and then not find employment. From what I have read from the other posts, you are not alone.

Thanks for the information. Could you tell me the time frame of when new classes start, like January or August? I researched their website but I couldn't find any information in regard to this. Thanks.

Thanks for the responses on AI. What entrance exam do they use to qualify candidates? I also heard there is a waiting list. Is this true?

Does anyone know about the LPN program at Portage Lakes Career Center. I visited their website but wondered if anyone had firsthand knowledge about the school. Thanks.

Anyone get their degree from Akron Institute?

Wow, that's great! You must be so excited. I have some personal questions if you don't mind, but I'm asking out of desperation for the information, not because I'm trying to be nosey. I am a non-traditional student going back to school after eons of years of being away from school. I'm wondering what the admissions requirements are. Do you already have your pre-req's out of the way? Did you have to take an entrance exam? When do classes start? Also. when I checked out Tri-C I noticed there were multiple campuses. Which one takes nursing students? That might be a dumb question but I was trying to use Mapquest to figure out my traveling time so without knowing which campus I would be going to there was no way to figure it out. Btw, I'm in the Akron area. Thanks for your time. I really appreciate it.

Akron/Canton Nursing Programs
Thank you for taking the time to respond. It's wearing me out trying to find my way into nursing school. I know I can do the work, but getting my foot in the right door is frustrating...so many things to consider! I hope your friend has great success because she certainly worked hard in that accelerated program. My guess is that she's very competent to be a nurse, but for some reason the written exam is a hurdle. I think that if she lasted throughout that rigorous program that speaks volumes. She'll pass the exam eventually, but it's understandable why she's discouraged. I wish her the best.
