  1. Thank you for responding. I accidentally posted the shift was 7a - 7 p. It was 7p - 7a which you probably figured out.
  2. I was orienting for my new night shift job recently, 7a - 7p, and learned that I am responsible to find coverage for the next shift (nurse or CNA) should someone call off. Usually call offs occur at 5:00 a.m. so that means I get to scramble and wake people up to find coverage while passing morning meds and completing my nurses notes and other duties. Oh, and we are also required to schedule/assign each nurse and CNAs to one of the 5 floors. At the other facilities I've worked at, there was a scheduler and it was their duty to find coverage. Is is a more common practice than I realize and am I wrong that it bothers me? I'm not comfortable waking people up at 5:00 a.m. to see if they can come in.
  3. I am an LPN new grad and had planned on going back for my RN. Now I'm struggling with the decision to bridge to RN since no one will hire unless you have experience. If no one will hire me as an LPN with no experience, I'm afraid that I won't be hired as an RN without experience either. I'm worried to rack up more student loan debt only to be left in the same position. I'm sure there are others out there that feel the same way. It's very frustrating.
  4. I don't know about a union. All I can say is that I received great care from the LPN's at this facility, and at times they were more caring than the RN's.
  5. Just last week an Akron, Ohio area hospital eliminated 70 LPN positions immediately. Some of the LPN's had worked there over 20 years. The hospital claims they won't see a deficit in the quality of client care by this decision. Really??? So those 70 nurses were standing around and not contributing anything to the workload? That's almost laughable.
  6. I think you and I are considering the same school. I wish we could find out more information from students that graduated from there. I like that they offer certifications in several areas which would give us an edge in the job market. It is considerably more but I really like the school. I live in the Tallmadge/Kent Ohio area by the way.
  7. I wish you the best. It has to be very disheartening to work so hard and then not find employment. From what I have read from the other posts, you are not alone.
  8. Thanks so much. I appreciate the information.
  9. Thanks for the information. Could you tell me the time frame of when new classes start, like January or August? I researched their website but I couldn't find any information in regard to this. Thanks.
  10. Thanks for the responses on AI. What entrance exam do they use to qualify candidates? I also heard there is a waiting list. Is this true?
  11. Does anyone know about the LPN program at Portage Lakes Career Center. I visited their website but wondered if anyone had firsthand knowledge about the school. Thanks.
  12. THANK YOU!!! Tri-C should hire you to be their recruiter, LOL! I checked out the other info you gave pertaining to Tri-C and I can't thank you enough. I know the others on this site feel the same. :bowingpur:bowingpur:bowingpur:bowingpur:bowingpur:bowingpur
  13. Wow, that's great! You must be so excited. I have some personal questions if you don't mind, but I'm asking out of desperation for the information, not because I'm trying to be nosey. I am a non-traditional student going back to school after eons of years of being away from school. I'm wondering what the admissions requirements are. Do you already have your pre-req's out of the way? Did you have to take an entrance exam? When do classes start? Also. when I checked out Tri-C I noticed there were multiple campuses. Which one takes nursing students? That might be a dumb question but I was trying to use Mapquest to figure out my traveling time so without knowing which campus I would be going to there was no way to figure it out. Btw, I'm in the Akron area. Thanks for your time. I really appreciate it.
  14. Thank you for taking the time to respond. It's wearing me out trying to find my way into nursing school. I know I can do the work, but getting my foot in the right door is frustrating...so many things to consider! I hope your friend has great success because she certainly worked hard in that accelerated program. My guess is that she's very competent to be a nurse, but for some reason the written exam is a hurdle. I think that if she lasted throughout that rigorous program that speaks volumes. She'll pass the exam eventually, but it's understandable why she's discouraged. I wish her the best.
  15. The 45 minute drive is too far.
  16. Hi, I'm trying to figure out the best nursing program. Does Akron Institute require pre-req's like the other nursing programs do? Right now I'm enrolled at Stark to get in my pre-req's. If I can pass a test and get accepted into a program without spending time and $$$ on pre-req's that would be great. I realize Akron Institute is majorly expensive compared to other nursing programs, but the waiting period plus the time spent on trying to obtain pre-req's to enter other programs makes Akron Institute somewhat enticing. Any information you can offer would be appreciated. Thanks and good luck.
  17. I understand your point. I think it's all about getting the degree sooner. I have a neice that started at Kent Stark Campus. She was given a time frame of when she would get into the nursing program so she worked her prerequisites there while waiting to get in. She found out later that they misled her on the waiting period so she had to rework her game plan. I think people are willing to pay the extra money just to avoid the headache of waiting to get accepted. I understand why some would think it's crazy to spend $$$$ for an Associates, but I think it's also crazy to spend 3 to 4 years for a 2 year degree because you're waiting to get into the program.
  18. I just wanted to clarify my error. There is a school in our area that uses similar acronyms in their name so I thought you were saying you got accepted into this school. ATI (the people that make the Teas exam) don't have a school. I just wanted to clear this up in case I wasn't clear in my last post.
  19. I'm an idiot. There is a school with the same initials ATI and it wasn't until hours later (after I sent the e-mail to you) that I realized the ATI you were talking about was the company that designed the exam. Thanks for responding so promptly though and forgive me for taking up your time.
  20. Yeah, Congratulations! Your hard work has paid off. I really appreciate your words of wisdom pertaining to ATI and the TEAS exam. I am considering attending ATI and wondered if you knew when the next round of testing will be done and when they will be accepting students for the next class? Not that you would know exact dates, but some kind of time frame so I can prepare for it. Thanks and good luck on your new endeavor!
  21. Hi, I am considering Akron Institute as well and share the same concerns as you. I noticed no one responded to your post and was wondering if you found information from other sources. I don't want to call Akron Institute because I don't want to get bombarded with solicitation calls from them. lol. I know what I want and don't want them trying to coerce me into coming in for a visit just so they can try to sell me on their program. At the price they are asking they should definitely be registered with NLN, which the last I checked they were not. I know they are pursuing this but still... I don't even doubt that their program is good, in fact it sounds very good, but the bottom line is, will employers respect the degree?
  22. Hi again. I thought I should mention that I loved Apollo College. If they had the ADN program I would definitely still be there. I don't feel that it was a waste of my time by any means. I gained so much from their courses. I just wish I had been on the right track due to my age (50).
  23. Thank you for replying to my post. I've made a decision on a local college to get in my prereq's and knock out as much of the nursing program courses I can until I am finally accepted. There is a waiting list everwhere I turn.
  24. I was enrolled in the Healthcare Administration thinking I was in the ADN program. I told the admission's counselor I wanted to be a nurse and that is the program she put me in. I did not know any better, I trusted that they would put me in the right program. I even had her confirm to me that at the end I would have an Associate's in Nursing. I figured they just called their program something different but the results would be the same, so I didn't think anything of it. Then friends and family asked me how they work in the clinicals if it is an on-line course. I didn't even know what they meant by "clinicals" so I called my student advisor and that is when I discovered I was in the wrong program. My student advisor (different from the one who signed me up) informed me that Apollo doesn't even have an ADN program so after seeing your post I'm really confused. Maybe it depends on what area a person lives in. I'm in the Akron-Cleveland, Ohio area. Do you mind if I ask how Apollo worked in your clinicals? I'd love to have input from anyone that knows anything about this. I've delayed getting my degree by 9 months from this mistake. ARGGG!!!
  25. Wow, what an inspiring (and cute) message. Your message makes me smile because I know her type - go! go! go! Her schedule made me tired just reading about it. lol. She didn't even have time to spit. I'm sorry she is sick. I can identify with your heartache because my mom died of ovarian cancer at age 63. It's a difficult time to go through.
