Air Force nursing FY2021

Hello all,

I have looked all over this site in hopes of finding others that are getting their packets ready and are applying to the Air Force this fall. I have not found any recent threads on this.

I am applying for an ER spot. I have been a RN for 7 years and work in a Level II trauma emergency center. I have my MSN-Administrative Leadership and TCRN. Is there anyone out there that is also getting their packets ready for October boards? My recruiter told me that because of COVID everything has been pushed back and that boards will meet in October this year. He also told me that I would be going to MEPS and doing my medical in the next 3 weeks.

Hello everyone. I know I’m a little late into this post. I missed the October board due to waiting on a waiver after MEPS. I was told there was another board coming up in December by my recruiter. I’m seeing some people say February. Just wanted some clarification if anyone has any knowledge.

I'm wondering if the board coming up in December is for nurse practitioners? I know nurse practitioners are on a rolling board, does anyone know how frequently they meet? I thought the board for nursing was in February as well.

@PKitsys That would make sense. I don’t know why the recruiter told me December. Said I’d probably hear something in January. The process has been a little chaotic and I’ve had several different recruiters.

Interesting, are you applying for an NP position?

I am so excited for y'all and can't seem to pull away from all the exciting updates! Unfortunately, I did not get selected. I was told no comments were made as to why, but I'd like to assume it was my lack of experience (passed NCLEX in Jan & started in the ICU Feb). I'd be lying if I said I wasn't extremely disappointed as this has been a dream of mine. Maybe everything happens for a reason though as my fiancé just received orders to Aviano last week. Any advice as to MY next steps.. is it possible to still apply to AD from overseas and/or does Reserves have OCONUS units? Thanks in advance y'all... I've loved keeping up with your good news. Good luck!

I’m sorry to hear that as well.  I’m sure with a little more experience you’ll be a shoe in, especially for ICU.

Everything for a reason though. I’m pretty sure I was meant to be born in Italy...I’m so excited for you to have that

The NPs on here can probably tell you better, but from what they said, NP boards are rolling so depending on when you applied you would fall into the next board and be notified. Their results were much faster than ours. Nurse boards are in October and January normally, but the January board has been pushed back to February.
They are also rolling out a new recruiter thing, so there are several recruiters based on where you are at in the process. Once selected, we are on a ‘phase 3’ recruiter, whatever that means. The switch is definitely frustrating, but that seems to be the name of the game here. Good luck on your boards!

Thanks for the info! So I’m applying for an RN spot, NICU specifically but was told there may or may not be any spots for my specialty. So I told them I would be OK with clinical nursing as a backup.

Good luck! I wonder why your recruiter told you December/January! I applied several months back for an NP position and my recruiter told me I'd hear back by September/October but I haven't been notified whether I was selected or or even not selected yet. She said she has no idea when I'll hear back at this point...the waiting game continues!

I was told the same for OB, so I applied OB with clinical as a backup. Even when I talked with the OB consultant, she couldn’t tell me how many spots were there. She did say if there wasn’t at least one slot, then she wouldn’t be interviewing me though. So hopefully if you get a NICU consultant interview, that’s a good sign. I reached out via facebook to several active duty OB nurses who were nice enough to answer about a million questions. The recruiter didn’t have a good grasp of OB and I’m assuming the same for NICU. I got a ton of info from them and a more realistic picture of the AF needs for OB and what would likely happen. I’d look on facebook and see if there is a NICU page. I think they all start with “Unofficial AF...Nurses.”

Update: I woke up to an e-mail from a Col last night and have been in zoom meetings, emailing, and texting all day. They had an issue with a piece of my paperwork that is hopefully fixed now. So obviously no orders yet. Hoping by Tuesday. I fly out next Sunday!

Oh my goodness! So yesterday I talked to my recruiter and apparently there is an issue with my scroll still pending so I should hopefully have orders by Tuesday or else I will be pushed to the Feb class I guess. I wonder if it's an issue with all the nurses?? I hope at least you get orders by Tuesday!! Fingers crossed!

No quarantining for me, just coordinating my move to Alaska from St Louis which might just happen at the last minute. And I live alone so no one really here to help once I leave for OTS, might be making one of my friends my POA LOL.

I will let you know if I figure it out with the certificates! I'm just now setting up my login for the precourse stuff.

I am in the same boat for trying to coordinate a move alone. Hopefully we get some more information soon.
