Air Force Nurse Corps

I will be graduating in May 2010 with my BSN. My current plan is to join the Air Force once I am done with school. I have spoken briefly to a recruiter but I am sure I could call him and ask him these questions but getting information from fellow nurses seems like a good idea. My main question is when do I need to like seriously commit to the Air Force? Do you do the training and all that jazz post graduation? I do not want to stop my schooling when I only have a year left. Any and all information is greatly apprecited!

Thank You!!!

Hollarz,

Don't worry too much about the interview. Know the AF core values. Know why you want to join and what qualities you bring to the AF. Even if you are a new grad and have no experience, you bring value! Your postive attitude, your attention to detail, your perseverence, etc. Dress in nice business casual (wear what you chose around first and make sure you are comfortable standing/sitting). Call your interviewer sir/maam. I also made a point of asking advice and questions.

Good luck and relax! If you got to the interview stage, you are way ahead of the game.

I was asked several questions about clinical situations I may or may not have been in. Looking back they had a lot to do with ethics and personal values (and they were rife with the core values, now that I think of it). If you have no experience, I've heard you might be asked, "what do you think you'd do in 'X' situation"?

Keep integrity, service before self, and excellence in all you do at the forefront of your mind (these are the AF core values).

And the AF mission statement, which is "to fly, fight, and win in air, space, and cyberspace".

(You'll not be flying and fighting to win, but you'll be supporting those that do - and that's your place in the mission of the USAF; without the med corps and the nurse corps, we couldn't keep the flyers and fighters on the ground and in the air.)

i don't know about everyone else, but my nurse interview was fabulous, probably the best interview i have ever had.

there were 3 of us there to be interviewed and all 3 of us went in with the col. and lt. col and talked for about 30-45 minutes before we all broke up. then he went over my 9 questions and resume with me and asked me to expand on them. at the end he told me the af would be crazy and stupid not to take me and tada, i am now in : )

just breathe and be yourself. be respectful (sir and ma'am). know the core values. know why you want to do this.

It was pretty much the easiest interview I've ever had as well, but I've also heard a few horror stories - few and far between, though. Mostly it seems people have had a very positive experience.

I second this statement. The chief nurse at Wright-Pat was awesome. It felt like we were chatting rather than interviewing.

Thanks everyone for the valued advice! I'm wondering if it will be a group interview. The recruiter will probably schedule my chief nurse interview sometime in August and by then there will probably be a whole crop of people who just graduated in May...

Also, has anyone interviewed at Travis??

On the subject, I need help too. I am graduating in another year(2011) with BSN. I have been thinking of joining the Air Force. I have talk to health recruiter once. All I was told to call once I done with my junior year. I did call back with no answer. Then I was told to wait for the beginning of my senior to call them. Is it true? I am just worried about it.

The number of applicants to the USAF NC is on the rise and the recruiters are swamped.

That said, blowing you off isn't good practice for anyone and I'm not excusing it.

If you live close enough, put in an appearance to the office - dress professionally, please; no jeans off your behind or loud tee-shirts if that's your gig :) - and say you'd like some information and you have some questions you need answered. That sort of makes them deal with you.

Above all, be patient; they ARE swamped right now and they've all been given more territory to handle than they probably truly can.

I think I have read you comment on the "hanging jeans" a few times before - it always makes me laugh a little!!!
