Ahpra application refusal

Published

Hi everyone,

I´m a registered nurse from Germany with 4 years experience. Went to the whole registration process with ahpra and waited 7 months. Today I received an email, that they are considering to refuse my application. The reason for that is, that they do not consider my training as equivalent with the Australian one. That is really a joke. Has someone ever been in this situation before? How did you write your appeal letter?

Hi everyone...a quick update. I sent out my appeal and documents on 23rd September per recommended post. However, APHRA claims they never got them. I've lodged a complaint with the post in Denmark (since I paid extra for quick, safe delievery and have a track and trace number). This also means that I'm not getting my appeal on the Board meeting in November - hopefully by December and hopefully without me having to resend all the documents (as it was quite pricey). So no new updates from me till December.

Nosilea, I'm crossing my fingers for you later this month :)

It was the same with my Letter of good standing. They said they have never received it.. I think they are just not organised and keep losing things. But of course it's always the applicants fault...

Sorry to hear about your situation. While it's always possible for mail to be lost, are you able to go online and see if the letter package was received using the tracking numbers? Good luck!

Oh that was last year. I had the tracking number and it said delievered. I had to resend the letter.

Lisbeth, I am sorry to hear about that. I have done a little research on internet and found out that the government in Victoria is not happy with the effectiveness of AHPRA. Right now they are running an investigation over the cost and the effectiveness of this organisation. By the end of November they are gathering all this data, so I imagine there will be some action after that. Nevertheless, different Boards are not happy with AHPRA's effectiveness too. I am not sure how this whole situation will affect us, let's hope for the best.

Nosilea - this will be interesting to see if it in any way will have an affect on all of our cases.

APHRA has now received my documents - funny that they received them just one day before one of my Aussie friends contacted them to hear if they had received it. Ha ha. I'm finding this process too long and in many ways unnecessary. At least I now know that they have them and that my case will be on the board meeting on 5th December.

Good luck to all of you - and Nosilea I'll be crossing my fingers for you on 17th October :)

I doubt this inquiry, will change anything about assessment of overseas nurses, the state boards have come together and erred on going the more cautious way, as Victoria is the head board.

Its the medical boards that are questioning, as they can, being medical doctors and having influence, they do not like being 'çlumped' with the more 'lowly'professions.

The issue of fees is being investigated as nurses fees were 5 years ago with the victorian nurses board 35 dollars and when the national board was to come into place, increased fees was a major concern, was promised it would not, and did, now five years later, 178 dollars yearly, so far more members all paying massive fees, how come so expensive? thats the investigation.

Hi I am a registered nurse from Switzerland with 2 1/2 years experience in different hospitals. I have lodged my application in to ahpra in April 2013 and I haven't heard from them yet. I have read about a lot of overseas nurses who got rejected by ahpra. I guess that they might reject me as well as I hold a diploma and not a degree. Does anyone know if ahpra rejects someone if they give you an option what to do that you will be recognised? For example study or bridging course?

Hi Denalane,

my application was rejected and they didn't give me any options for further studies. They only over the bridging course for nurses with Bachelor. I'm from Germany.

Did you do 3 years of nursing? Did you work in hospitals or nursing homes? In Germany do you start your nursing school when you are 16 years old? I have read that they compared your qualifications with a enrolled nurse so would you be eligible to work as an EN then? In switzerland i have done a 3 years apprenticeship first similar to an EEN in australia and after that I have done my 3 year nursing diploma. That bachelor thing is just so annoying.

Hi,

yes I did a 3 year apprenticeship. I started my training with 18. I worked two years on a Neurological/Neurosurgical Ward and two years as an anaesthetic nurse. So I'm well qualified in my opinion. I have applied for registration as an Enrolled Nurse. Probably another half year of waiting :-/ I'm thinking about doing a one year programme at UQ Brisbane. They have a programme for overseas nurses. However, I have to wait until my Pr visa comes through. Because I can't afford to pay 25000$ a year.

You will still have to pay your fees upfront, the lower domestic fees, as there is no defer of payment or discounts for non citizens.

So that would be approx. 12,000 a year outright for 8 undergrad units.
