Hi everyone,
I´m a registered nurse from Germany with 4 years experience. Went to the whole registration process with ahpra and waited 7 months. Today I received an email, that they are considering to refuse my application. The reason for that is, that they do not consider my training as equivalent with the Australian one. That is really a joke. Has someone ever been in this situation before? How did you write your appeal letter?
Hi Baylini,
In what kind of process is your friend at the moment? The main point of the refusal letter says, that my qualification combined with my experience doesn't meet the educational minimum requirements and is it not commensurate with an Australian Bachelor Degree. It does say, that they find it equal to a Diploma of Nursing. But why does Anmac say that my qualification is recognised as the same standard as an Australian Bachelor degree. That's really ridiculous and doesn't make sense.
Ahpra compares your hours and subjects to the Australian degree, i believe your subject hours arnt equivalent. How many hours theory and practical did you study. Australia is very expensive for international students it would be best to check your university's so you don't get ripped off. Melbourne has the most courses for international students. If I was you i would ask ahpra to state the minimum requirements and upload then onto here so that people don't waste time and money. Ahpra is poorly organised and they are no doubt low staff with poor government funding in my opinion.
Hi,
I tried to get the minimum requirements from them but no reply about that. It's just so mean that they don't state exact requirements. If you ask them if your qualification is recognised they say: "just apply for an assessment and we will tell you afterwards" I wouldn't pay the international student fees. I wait for my Pr.
pusteblume did they compare you with a diplom nurse ( like an enrolled nurse) or a diploma nurse like they had 10 years ago here before they introduced the bachelor. Because I think if they compare your apprenticeship with a enrolled nurse then you would porbably have to do the 2 years course at uni. (like the course for enrolled nurse who wanna become a registered nurse here, cost you around 50000 dollars for 2 years though. But if they compare you with a diploma nurse (like they had here before the bachelor was introduced then I guess the 1 year program would be enough) but apparently they can still tell you to do the 3 months bridging program IRON after you have done a 1 year conversion program. I guess I just wait until i get an answer and then enrol in a course 1 or 2 years because I dont wanna waste my money and pay for a 1 year course and then in the end they say it is not good enough ...the annoying thing is just that those courses only start once a year i think. And next year my IELTS expires which is annoying so I can do it again. But anyway at least it gives me the chance to go home and save the money up to do such an expensive program...What kinf of visa are you on pusteblume? Do you go home sometimes and work back in germany? I usually go home every 4 months and work for 4 months because unfortunatly Switzerland doesnt offer a work and travel visa here.
I wouldn't do any course without getting advise from them. I wouldn't mind doing a 2 year course. UQ says on their website that overseas nurses who are not eligible to register with ahpra maybe still eligible to do the 1 year course. I'm waiting on my Pr visa at the moment. I don't go back to Germany to work as a nurse. That's torture. You have 12 patients to look after in the dayshift. During the night a lot more. I'll never work in Germany as a nurse again. If I decide to go back someday I'll do something else.
Hi to you all,
They informed me (after me sending them an email first asking for any news) that my appeal was not reviewed on 17th of October either. My initial application (March) and my appeal are going to be reviewed under the new standards (national law) for international nurses. But they can't give me any specific date yet. Once again, I will have to wait. Well, according to the National Law I deserve registration straight away, regarding my 4 - year bachelor degree and my hospital experience. I strongly suggest to all of you, if you have the requirements the National Law describes, make definitely an appeal. I hope they will start doing their job with objectivity and fairness. Good luck to us all!!
Nosilea, I'm so sorry to hear this. I can't believe they didn't inform you beforehand - it's the least they could do. You should keep pushing them for a date - you are entitled to know when your case will be reviewed.
I haven't heard anything so I'm still hoping that they haven't postponed my case also. My appeal is planned to be on the Board meeting in December.
Keep us updated and good luck to you :)
Apparently APHRA is now changing the rules for assessing/registration of internationally trained nurses. According to their website they are no longer using the Framework for assessing international nurses. Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia - Internationally Qualified Nurses and Midwives - this could either be good or bad news for us European trained nurses. I wonder what this will mean for my appeal as parts of it related to the Framework. Ah well, I guess I just have to be patient and wait and see. I'm still hoping to hear news by mid December. Have a great weekend everybody :)

You will Need to have recency of practice as an Enrolled Nurse to meet the requirements, make sure you confirm with ahpra before paying for any course. I'm from australia and my girlfriend is waiting on her application, the hole process is a joke, under staffed and i would suggest that was workers are lazy and can't be bothered or there paid peanuts so you get peanuts back. Pusteblum what did the letter exactly say?
