*Ahem* A Reminder - It Is *That* Time of Year Again

Published

Halloween is just two weeks away. Anyone looking to wear whites and or a cap for costume or other purposes, time is a wasting. Especially if one intends to shop on eBay or order from Kay's.

Speaking of eBay, it is always around this time of year lots of vintage uniforms and such pop up, some of it NOS.

Yes, PLEASE do away with the Naughty Nurse costumes this Halloween.

..... unless, of course, it's in the privacy of your own bedroom.

DoGood, what a NEAT hobby! I still have my nursing cap (with the black band) stored away. Worked too hard for it to throw it away! Ahhhh....those were the days! :sniff: I know there have been many threads posted on this subject, but I think we lost "something" of the profession when we left the whites. The end of an era when nurses were held in much higher regard.

Whites are still around, at least for the floors. Last time one heard, Lenox Hill here in NYC put it's floor nurses back into whites a few years ago. Caps are another story. Don't think there are many hospitals in this area that still require them, however most places you are free to wear one if you want. OTHO some places do frown upon if not out right forbid nurses to wear them (caps). Think this has to do with being seen as the "only nurse" on a floor by standing out with that "hat" on.

Being as the above may, for all the "I don't/won't wear a cap" talk here in forum, they do a brisk business on eBay. Nursing capes are another popular item.

Vintage uniforms are somewhat popular, especially when new, but many of the designs are just too impractical for modern floor nursing. Even some made in the 1970's and 1980's feature fitted bodices, tight waists, fitted long or 3/4 sleeves, and rows of buttons. In short kind of "frou-frou" for most girls today. Many were designed to be worn with under gear common to the day (slips, petticoats, etc), again stuff modern girls may not be familiar with and or want to bother with daily.

Am trying to find some of the older pre "perma-starch" jobs to practice my starching and goffering (a type of fancy ironing) skills, but they seem to be very hard to find.

(Kidding, because I'm busy getting ready to move and can't fool with it now. Maybe next year, lol.)
