Agency Nurses Paying out of Pocket

Specialties Agency

Specializes in ER.

Has any agency nurses ever paid out of pocket for health requirements? We had a supposed agency nurse throw a fit because we refused to do their occupational health requirements in the ER. Keep in mind we were also busy. Supposedly they were told to use their own insurance but this seems crazy. I suggest a place for them to go but they threw a hissy fit and said they'd go to (rival er).

I would imagine their agency would send them to a legit occupational health provider. After all, a lot of those are specialized tests. I couldn't get a physical from anyone off the street from my jobs. Some jobs even want to limit which physicians you see. I also couldn't imagine paying out of pocket for those tests. Maybe a drug test but even then that is rare. Wouldn't these potentially knock someone below minimum wage depending on the cost of the tests? Not to mention wouldn't insurance question the tests?

Specializes in ED, ICU, PSYCH, PP, CEN.

When I did agency, per diem and travel nurse I had to do all of this on my own with no reimbursement. It is something that you do in order to be eligible for hire. Some people need to grow up and take care of their business.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

I was considering working for an agency several years ago and, back then, had been expected to pay for any pre-hire health requirements with my own money.
