Afraid of joining the "Real World"...

Hello everyone! I am starting nursing school next year. Call me crazy, but I am so excited to start my nursing classes! However, I am very apprehensive about working when I am done with school. I love school and everything that goes along with it. I want to get my masters degree just to stay in school longer. I was wondering what the transition from student to nurse is like. Has anyone had this experience before? I am afraid I might not get the hang of it. Am I crazy for asking this question? Thanks!

The biggest thing in transitioning from student to nurse IMO was suddenly havng this license that you'd heard about for so long. Instead of responding to a pt's questions with, "I'll go ask your nurse" it dawns on you that you are the person other people are going to go ask lol.

All you'll need is the ability to recognize when you don't know something and no fear to ask when you don't. For now, just (enjoy?) school and you'll be out on the floor before you know it. Good luck :).

You are not crazy for asking this question. In fact, I think you are wise to be assessing yourself and exploring the issues that concern you. Be aware of the potentially difficult aspects of the student to RN transition can better help you prepare to meet the challenges and succeed. However, I wouldn't worry too much about that now. Take it gradually and give yourself time to "grow up" as you go through the educational process. It won't happen all at once.

Good luck,

I think a lot of nurses go through this transition - I would say it is a 'normal' question to ask. Of course it will be a strange transition, and not easy, but at the same time, to fulfill your dreams... it's great. It's the culmination of everything you will have worked for - I still remember my first shift after qualifying - and that was almost 25 years ago... the pride and fear of walking into the ward as 'staff nurse' was unbelieveable and stays with me to this day as one of the best moments in my life...:nurse:

Thanks for the helpful advice! I love this site! You are all great!
